CCSD teachers head to summer school

​The best classroom teachers never stop learning, and that’s certainly the case in the Cherry Creek School District. As soon as school was out for the summer, hundreds of teachers headed straight back to class – as students in the CCSD Summer Learning Academy.

Held June 9-13 at Eaglecrest High School, the academy offered sessions on Colorado Academic Standards implementation, Excellence and Equity, Instructional Technology, Planning for Instruction and Thinking Maps.  Classes covered subject areas including English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, STEM, Social Studies, English Language Acquisition and World Languages.

“These classes have been good,” said Jamie Flaig, a math teacher at West Middle School. “My tool box for struggling learnings wasn’t as strong as I wanted it to be, and the techniques I learned here will really help me help my students.”

“It will make us better teachers for all kids,” agreed Maria Buscemi, also a math teacher at West. “I wanted to further my own education in how to effectively reach all kids.”

Now in its second year, the CCSD Summer Learning Academy created an opportunity for over 1,100 session participants to receive quality professional learning experiences offered by some of the best professional developers in the Cherry Creek School District.

The culminating event was a special keynote session that featured Dr. Pedro Noguera from the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Development.  His session focused on “Creating Conditions for Powerful Teaching and Learning.”  The Instructional Support Facility was packed with well over 100 engaged educators who were fortunate enough to learn from one of the most well regarded scholars on equitable learning environments.

“The excitement around this week is just another example of the commitment our educators have to never stop learning so that they can improve the lives of the students they serve,” said Dr. Floyd Cobb, Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction, whose office hosted the event. “Our superintendent, Dr. Bull, has challenged us to continuously strive to improve our craft and we see this event as an opportunity to do so.”

Although the Cherry Creek School District offers many professional development opportunities throughout the year, the Summer Learning Academy, allows the district to offer a wide array of courses at one time in one location. The goal is to make it easier for teachers to meet district, state and federal requirements for continuing education. In Colorado, teachers must earn six credits – the equivalent of 90 hours of professional development – every five years in order to maintain their certification.
