Madelyn Sestak, a 5th Gear Kid and fifth-grader at Rolling Hills Elementary, is taking her family to Yellowstone National Park this summer. That’s because she’s the Grand Prize Winner in this year’s 5th Gear Kids program. Sestak got the good news during her math class on April 30th.

“I was surprised that I won,” Sestak said, after learning she would be taking her mom and two brothers to see Old Faithful and other natural wonders in July. “But I’m excited because I like hiking a lot.”
Hiking, biking, basketball, walking the dog and other healthy activities became part of Sestak’s daily routine after she joined the 5th Gear Kids program, which teaches fifth graders about energy balance how to balance fun physical activity with a healthy diet – to promote energy and good health.
“It was life-changing for her,” said Sestak’s mother, Carolyn Sestak. “She was very focused on how she looked and now she’s more focused on how she feels. She’s changed her eating habits – more ‘I don’t want chips in my lunch, I want an apple.’”
Carolyn Sestak said the program has had a positive impact on the whole family. “Even our dog’s gotten more fit!”
5th Gear Kids can use their 5th Gear Kids card to earn points and prizes and get discounts at participating restaurants and recreation facilities. Their families can also use the card for a 10% discount on all Private Selection foods at King Soopers.
The 5th Gear Kids program is privately funded by the Colorado Health Foundation and sponsored by the University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center in collaboration with Children’s Hospital Colorado, Cherry Creek Schools and Aurora Public Schools.
