Cherokee Trail High School students honored at Especially Me Conference

Alexis johnson and haley rogers holding their unstoppable plaques on stage at the especially me conference

Thirty students from Cherokee Trail High School attended the 18th Annual Especially Me Conference, held April 23 at Gateway High School in Aurora. Two of those students, seniors Alexis Johnson and Haley Rogers, received special recognition during the conference, which was titled “Unstoppable” and focused on empowering female African American high school students.

The mission of EspeciallyMe™ is to "promote and facilitate ideas, attitudes, goals and lifestyles that will encourage school-age youth to adopt and sustain concepts of positive self-value and dignity in defining and pursuing success and excellence.”

Johnson received the 18th Annual Especially Me High School Award, which recognizes African American high school women who display positive self-concepts of excellence. Johnson was selected because she exemplifies personal, academic, and social self-value as displayed through her actions and because she shares those attributes with those around her and in her community.

Johnson also received a music scholarship from the Especially Me organization. Influenced by her father’s interest in jazz, Johnson started playing musical instruments in fifth grade and initially learned by watching YouTube videos. She now plays the alto sax, baritone sax, soprano sax, guitar, flute, acoustic bass and electric bass, which is her favorite. She is a member CTHS Jazz Band. Johnson was accepted into the Berkley College of Music, but has chosen to attend the University of Denver where she will major in Jazz Studies with a minor in Japanese.

Haley Rogers received the Especially Me Achievement Award and the Celena Hollis Fund Scholarship. Rogers is a four-year varsity letter recipient in Track and Field. She was an integral part of Cherokee Trail’s first 5A State Championship in Track in 2015. She has accepted a scholarship to attend Brigham Young University where she will run track.

Rogers was a speaker at the Cherry Creek Schools Parents’ Council April meeting, which featured graduating seniors who have overcome adversity. Although Rogers lost both parents during the time that she was in high school, she has maintained strong academics and was recently recognized with a Language Arts Department award. She has participated in the district poetry slam and has been a part of the Cherokee Trail Literary Magazine.
