Raptor safety system soars into second year of districtwide use

Visitors to Cherry Creek schools during the 14-15 school year will again be greeted by the Raptor ID safety system, which successfully screened more than 258,000 school visitors last year.

Raptor is a visitor registration system that scans a driver’s license and/or state ID and checks the information against the National Sex Offender data base.  If no match is found, the system will print a visitor’s sticker with a picture identifying them as an approved visitor.

The system was used districtwide last year, after being used for several years at middle and high schools in the district. The system is part of Cherry Creek Schools’ comprehensive safety and security systems, which are designed to protect students, staff and school visitors.

The Raptor ID system only scans the visitor’s name, date of birth and photo for comparison purposes. No other personal identifying information is saved.

If the system raises a question about a visitor’s background, school officials take the necessary steps to ensure the appropriateness of each individual’s visit.

The first time someone visits a Cherry Creek school, the Raptor ID process will take about 30 seconds. However, on return visits, guests will only be required to enter the first three letters of their last name and the system will recognize them.

The Cherry Creek School District thanks parents and other school visitors for their patience and participation in the Raptor ID system. If you have any questions about the system, please call your school’s principal or Randy Councell, Cherry Creek Schools director of Safety and Security, at 720-554-4489.
