Board hears hiring trends for 2015 during October meeting

The Cherry Creek School District hired nearly 500 teachers, mental health professionals and nurses for the 2015-16 school year, qualified professionals who were among more than 3,800 to apply for licensed positions.

Those totals figured among detailed data contained in the annual hiring report presented to the Cherry Creek School District Board of Education during its regular meeting on Oct. 12. Todd Fukai, the district's executive director of human resources, joined HR directors Tracey Grant and Amanda Waleski to offer a larger picture of the personnel updates for the current year. As in past years, the report detailed the total number of new hires in several categories, including licensed employees, classified employees and administrators.

The district hired 2,908 classified employees out of a total of 4,563 applicants. The 500 new licensed employees hired for the 2015-16 school year represents a decrease from the 2014-15 school year, when the district hired 526 applicants out of a pool of more than 4,100. More than 50 percent of the new teacher hires for the 2015-16 school came from other school districts in Colorado, a trend that echoed statistics from last year.

The presenters also detailed the district's recruiting efforts to find the best candidates from across the country. For example, the new crop of CCSD teachers included hires from different states around the country. Human resources staff spoke to the importance of keeping up recruiting efforts, as well as starting to foster home-grown teachers from district schools.

"We remain committed to growing and developing our own," Waleski said, pointing to data that showed a total of 40 student teacher hires for the 2015-16 school year.
