Dear Parents,
Our children, as citizens of the Twenty First Century, are going to have to make some of the toughest decisions of any generation, based on their understanding of emerging science and technology. Science, technology, engineering, and math are the basic skills expected by employers. In order to prepare our students, education is focusing on S.T.E.M. education.
Science fairs involve students in the practices of science, technology, engineering and math. Students may apply these skills to a topic of interest to them. Doing science is the key to understanding science. A science fair project is a great way to apply thinking and problem-solving skills.
Our school is holding a science fair on Wednesday, November 16, 2011, and all students in 5th grade are required to participate. Students in grades K-4 are invited to participate. Hands-on scientific investigations are the focus at our fair. Over the next several weeks, your child has the opportunity to design, test, analyze and present a project that uses an investigative procedure to solve a problem. (No Live Animals)
Please note that the bulk of the work will be done at home. A packet is located on the CHVE website. This packet will help guide you and your student through the process of conducting a scientific investigation. We will also be discussing the process in class.
It is very important for students to be committed to completing a project if they register. All grades other than fifth are allowed to work with partners. Students do not need to be from the same grade level or class. Each project must include a journal and a display board. Journals are very basic at the primary level and become more detailed for intermediate students. For your convenience, the backboard and journals (folder with tabs) will be for sale after school for $10.00. Sales dates to be announced.
