Statement:
My artwork focuses on the dramatic use of color, light and texture to
create subtle and sometimes explicit visual metaphors of contemporary
and often nostalgic life. Sometimes within a series of work,
the inspirations for my paintings are derived from the visceral notions
of construction and destruction. In some works, the imagined sense
of space and time are captured.
Biography:
Dan Lopez studied ceramics working under (the late Richard DeVore)and Ken Hendry
while obtaining a B.F.A. at Colorado State University. Lopez graduated
in 2001 with a B.F.A and in 2006 earned a Master’s in education while
instructing and living in Denver. In 2001, Lopez’s ceramic tea pot was
inducted into “C.S.U.’s ceramics study collection.” Less than a year
later, Lopez took an artistic turn when he discovered oil painting from Patrice Sullivan.
He began painting pictures on his own. Most images were studies of
landscapes and still lives, later the images began to reveal his
interest in the notions of war and civilization with a return to quiet
luscious landscapes. While some subjects are figures and buildings in
“space,” his work focuses not so much on a particular place but on the
dramatic use of color, light and texture. This has brought him to be
placed in private collections throughout: Colorado, Arizona, Tennessee,
Hong Kong, Scotland and the U.K.
