Debi Christensen, Music
The music program at Cottonwood Creek follows the Colorado State and Cherry Creek Standards for Music Education.
All students at Cottonwood Creek participate in a comprehensive music program that includes singing, dancing, instrument playing, listening and music reading.
Students in grades 3-5 play recorders in music class. They participate in the Recorder Karate program. As students demonstrate proficiency they earn “belt” rankings advancing from white belt to black belt and beyond.
Each grade level also performs in a musical production each year. For the 2011-2012 school year the productions will be:
- Kindergarten - “Our First Year of School”
- First Grade - “This Old Gingerbread House”
- Second Grade - “How to Be a Friend in Six Easy Steps”
- Third Grade - “The Spirit of America”
- Fourth Grade - “Americans All”
- Fifth Grade - Continuation Day
In addition the Cottonwood Choir will perform a Winter Concert, “A Season of Light” and a Spring Concert.
Students also have opportunities in before and after school programs to further their musical skills in band, choir, orchestra and recorder club.
Bobbi Toews, Art
Cottonwood Creek's art curriculum is based on Cherry Creek School District standards as well as providing interdisciplinary learning of specific grade level units.
For example, when first grade studies Japan in their classrooms, they study Japanese artwork in art class and make a clay Japanese tea set.
Cottonwood Creek celebrates the work of all students. Throughout the school year, as classes finish art projects, they are posted on the hallways. At the end of the year, an art show is hosted for parents to view a years worth of art.
Matt Mundy, Physical Education
“Physical education is the beginning of the lifelong learning
process in which schools teach children how to live as active,
healthy adults with both active bodies and active minds.” PE4life
A quality Physical Education program incorporates all aspects of movement skills, physical fitness and personal wellness. This includes the five components of physical fitness: muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardio respiratory endurance, flexibility, and body composition. Cottonwood Creek’s Physical Education program encourages every student to benefit and succeed, regardless of his/her ability or experience. We use a skills based approach in to teach locomotor, manipulative and stability skills that will set the students up for success in activities and sports. Students will work cooperatively with others, developing a sense of fair play and sportsmanship. Active participation will in turn promote the students to carry on a healthy lifestyle.
For the first time in several years, Technology is now part of the Kindergarten through fifth grade Special’s rotation. All students’ lessons are based on the International Society for Technology Education Performance Indicators for Students.
Each technology class, students practice typing for about 10 minutes, and then move into a lesson. Not only are basic computer skills taught, but the 21st Century Skills such as Website Evaluation, Critical Thinking and Collaboration are weaved into every lesson. There is also a focus on STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) lessons throughout the grade levels.
