At Coyote Hills, Reading and Writing plays a big part in instruction. Our teachers establish a strong relationship with parents through daily communication and feedback in order to meet student needs. Our reading program is tailored to meet the individual needs of our students.
One on One Conferencing
Each student spends time during the school week meeting with his/her teacher to discuss PM books, lexiled chapter books, and F.A.S.T books. During these conferences, students work on fluency, comprehension strategies, and writing strategies in order to become great readers and think critically about the material presented.
Students are expected to read for at least 20 to 30 minutes daily at home.
F.A.S.T.
F.A.S.T. stands for Foundations of Analysis, Synthesis, and Translation. The program is based on scientific research and more than 20 years of teaching experience. F.A.S.T. balanced approach of explicit, systematic phonics and natural reading is infused with multimodality techniques to help you deliver instruction that is powerful, individualized, and engaging.
Write...From the Beginning
Write...from the Beginning is a developmental writing program for Kindergarten through 5th Grade focused on those criteria necessary for successful writing achievement beyond the elementary years.
The program includes both narrative and expository writing, each utilizing the Thinking Maps Common Visual Language. Teachers build upon and extend the instruction of previous grades by using Modeled Instruction, Improvement Rubrics, and Focused Mini-Lessons. The resultant effect is a common, targeted focus and school-wide accountability which creates an expectation of high student writing achievement on state and local writing tests.
