FOSS

FOSS is a research-based science curriculum for grades K–8 developed at the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California at Berkeley. FOSS is also an ongoing research project dedicated to improving the learning and teaching of science. The FOSS project began over 20 years ago during a time of growing concern that our nation was not providing young students with an adequate science education. The FOSS program materials are designed to meet the challenge of providing meaningful science education for all students in diverse American classrooms and to prepare them for life in the 21st century. Development of the FOSS program was, and continues to be, guided by advances in the understanding of how youngsters think and learn.

 

Sci-Tech Lab
 
All students, 2nd – 5th grade, go to the SciTech Lab weekly.  The SciTech Lab is set up according to Life Science, Physical Science, Earth and Space Science, and Scientific Reasoning.  Each computer houses a different lab, and via the computer, students are directed to get a tray of materials to run through a lab.  The character on the computer briefs students on the topic, and guides them through an activity.  Students answer questions on the computer.  When students complete their lab and questions, the character reviews the lesson.  Students are given feedback immediately.

 

 
 
 
Students in the fifth grade are using National Geographic books, technology, and inquiry-based activities to build upon their prior knowledge.  5th grade students are immersed in science 1 ½ hours daily!
