Destination Imagination

Destination Imagination (DI) is a creative problem-solving after-school program for students in kindergarten through college.  DI teaches problem-solving strategies, teamwork and creativity.  Teams must brainstorm their solutions to one of five challenges, then build and present them on their own - with no outside help.  In the five months of time that they work on their challenge, team members create their solution, write scripts, compose music, make props, design scenery, and make costumes.  A team consists of up to seven members managed by one or two team managers (parent volunteers).

There are two levels in which teams can present their solutions.  The primary level is for students in kindergarten through second grade.  These teams simply present their solutions and are given constructive feedback, without competing for a rank score.  Students in third through fifth grade compete in the elementary level.  In March, these teams compete against other teams in the district.  Winners at the district level continue to the State Competition, and if successful, may continue to the World Competition.

DI is open to all students who wish to participate.

First Lego League

Dry Creek is happy to participate in a new activity, the First Lego League, which is a robotics program. First Lego League utilizes LEGO MINDSTORMS technology while adding kids’ creativity. Teams consist of six to ten children age 9 – 14. By embracing the Core Values of FLL, participants learn that friendly competition and mutual gain are not separate goals, and that helping one another is the foundation of teamwork.  Parent volunteers coach the team and a sponsor teacher work collaboratively with the student team members. Dry Creek’s First Lego League teammates will work on a challenge to design and create a robot to accomplish a specific task, and present a research project based on the challenge. Each team will meet every Tuesday from September through October and compete in an all-day Saturday tournament in November. As a parent-led activity First Lego League is dependent upon community volunteers.

Chess Club

Chess Club is a before-school activity run by parents and teachers.  Students learn the fundamentals of the game and get to compete with each other.  The club meets once a week on Friday morning from October through March from 8:10 to 8:45.  All students are welcome regardless of playing experience and it is not necessary to sign up.  Parents who wish to participate should contact Mr. Smith.

Super Saturday

Super Saturday is a periodic, two-hour hands-on focus on a particular topic in Creative Problem Solving, Math, Science or World Cultures.  There are usually two sessions, one for K-2nd and one for 3-5th grades.  Sign-up forms are sent home in the Dolphin Digest.  Space is limited to approximately 20 students who sign up (turn the form into the main office - it will be marked with the date and time). Super Saturdays are presented by Dry Creek teachers and/or community volunteers.

Student Council

Each classroom in grades two through five elects two representatives to the Student Council.  The Council sponsors several community service projects throughout the year such as the Salvation Army Canned Food Drive, Quarters for Kids, Coins for Critters for the Dumb Friends League, and playground clean up.  Meetings are once a month on Tuesday mornings.  Student Council is a great opportunity for students to get involved at Dry Creek!

Spanish Club

Spanish Club sessions take place at Dry Creek twice a year: in the fall and in the spring. The club is open to 1st through 5th graders and is more social/cultural than academic. The emphasis is on fun: cooking (and eating), crafts, music and games. The last session is a fiesta with food and a piñata. This club charges a fee to cover the cost of materials and salary. Watch for signup sheets coming home as the club is very popular and fills up quickly! If you would like to volunteer to help out for one of the 6 week sessions, your child will attend for free.

The Dry Creek Annual Spanish Bee takes place in May and is open to 3rd through 5th graders who have excelled in Spanish throughout the school year. The contest is held during an all-school assembly and winners from each grade receive medals and prizes.

Cooking Club
Cooking Club meets for 3 weeks beginning in early November, then again in February.  We cook breakfast the first week, then lunch and finally dinner items.  We then set the tables and have a feast!  It's for 3rd through 5th graders and is sponsored by Mrs. Jacobson and Mrs. Sterner.
