In Elk Creek, we strive to create a collaborative learning atmosphere that brings students together to take responsibility
for their own learning. Our mission is all students will succeed in the integrated curriculum with an emphasis on teaching both academic as well as “life skills”. Examples
include note taking and study skills strategies, self-advocacy skills, collaboration, goal setting, and self-reflection. Fourth graders follow four simple rules of Being Present, Being responsible, Being
Respectful, and Having Courage.
It takes courage to be life-long learners.
Reading and Writing
Fourth Graders develop reading and writing skills based on the workshop
approach.
We believe it is essential to read like writers . There is much focus and attention to using high level vocabulary
and teaching grammar in context whenever possible. By participating in the “Hot Rod” Program, students
are encouraged to read books at their own level. Additionally, the children read a variety of literature
and non-fiction texts including novels, themed units, “Scholastic News,” and
“Time for Kids”. We expect students to read a minimum of two chapter books a month. The 6-Trait Writing Program and Wordly Wise curriculum for Vocabulary
is a big emphasis in both oral and written language. Technology is also used to enhance our language arts curriculum across content.
Spelling
Elk Creek uses a combination of spelling programs to meet the needs of all children.
Science
The Discovery Works science curriculum is slowly being replaced
by Foss Science.
Topics include but are not limited to Earths Land, Classifying Living Things,
Weather, and Magnitism and Electricity.
Social Studies
The social studies content explores Colorado History and the Rocky Mountain Region. Students visit Plains Conservation
Center and the Colorado Capitol to reinforce skills taught during the year.
Math
The Everyday Math curriculum continues in the third, fourth and fifth
grades. Everyday Math develops mathematical thinking by exploring a
variety of problem solving approaches and algorithms that accommodate
diverse learning styles and abilities. Everyday
Math is aligned with the goals and philosophy of Campus and West Middle
Schools. In addition, fourth graders participate in the Stand Out math program in which students chant and participate in various movements to
support concepts.
