Program Philosophy

The library media program at Dry Creek is a “one of a kind” program that aims to provide enrichment and extension of classroom curriculum through individualized, alternative instruction. The media Para educators and nearly fifty volunteers staff the program.

The Program

Dove Creek (1 book per week)
Students attend weekly sessions that teach literature, beginning reading skills, and crafts. The first half of the year focuses on seasonal books and poetry and the second half covers folk tales.

Fox Creek (3 books per week plus a book bag bimonthly)
Students attend weekly literature sessions; these classes cover the top authors of children’s literature. Parent volunteers help each individual reading group with the story and follow-up activity.  A beginning library skills unit is taught during this time slot.

Students participate in the SRA individualized reading program. This program teaches phonics, comprehension and vocabulary. Parent volunteers help each student individually with this program.

Bear Creek (7 books per week, 3 regular and 4 Accelerated Reader)
Students attend two weekly literature sessions.  This program is similar to the first grade program only with the literature appropriate to second grade.  Two library skills units are taught during this time slot.

Bear Creek participates in Accelerated Reader weekly. Students select four paperback books from a special reading level collection (level is designated by the homeroom teacher). The level is easier than the instructional level, so children learn to read with more fluency.

Beaver Creek (5 books per week)
Students attend a weekly literature session.  Library skills units are also taught during this time slot. Students attend one weekly session of the SRA individualized reading program.  The program adds more English rules, library skills and vocabulary.

Beaver Creek participates in Accelerated Reading. In this program students select books from a collection of over 1,100 titles, read them, and take a computerized quiz on the book. They accumulate points based on the difficulty and length of each book. These points can then be redeemed at the Prize Store, which is supported by the PTCO & manned by parent volunteers. This program is very effective in improving comprehension skills and vocabulary.
