In
Wolf Creek we strive to make the move from elementary school to middle school a
comfortable transition. We do this by implementing a variety of
techniques and philosophies that will be seen by the students in their middle
school experiences.
Reading
and Writing
We use novel groups, literature circles and mini-lessons involving picture
books to captivate our students into achieving their individual and group
reading goals. Step-up to Writing and Six-Traits are the writing
curriculums used. We experiment with expository, persuasive and narrative
writing. To support spelling and vocabulary development, fifth grade
incorporates Wordly Wise.
Science
We use FOSS along with Discovery Works to guide our science curriculum.
Fifth Grade units include the human body, mixtures and solutions, solar system,
solid earth, and systems of living things.
Social
Studies
We study United States history from the European exploration of the Western
continents and the establishment of the thirteen colonies through the Twentieth
Century.
Math
The Everyday Math curriculum continues in the third, fourth and fifth
grades. Everyday Math develops mathematical thinking by exploring a
variety of problem solving approaches and algorithms that accommodate diverse
learning styles and abilities. Everyday Math is aligned with the goals
and philosophy of Campus and West Middle Schools.
W.O.L.F.
The fifth grade
students are role models to the younger students in the school, and earn the
opportunity to participate in some special projects and/or field trips. Wonderful Outside Learning Fun (W.O.L.F.) is
the title used to refer to these activities that take place during the school
day, but not in the normal way. The cost
to cover these activities is introduced to the fourth graders and collected by
the time fifth grade begins.
W.O.L.F. includes teambuilding
and other activities related to fifth grade educational standards.
