High Plains Music Program
All students at High Plains take part in music classes. Lessons are based on the Colorado State Music
Standards for kindergarten through fifth grades. Students learn about the basic elements of
music and how to apply those elements.
Students of all grade levels learn how to read and write music, perform
as a group, sing, music history, music technology, and important musical
composers. Each grade-level performs a
musical program every year. The shows
vary each year and teach different musical genres, styles and have an academic
connection. Students also learn to play
instruments. Younger students play
percussion instruments (drums, xylophones, boomwhackers, etc.) while older
students learn to play recorders and can-joes.
This is an excellent way to incorporate all of our music standards in a
very enjoyable manner.
Extra-Curricular Music Classes
High Plains students have several options for additional
music studies. Students K-2 are invited to take part in Music Club. The High Plains Choir is open to students in
grades 3-5. The Band is for students in
fourth and fifth grades. Additional
information on each of these classes can be found on the Activities & Clubs
page.
The Cherry Creek School
District also offers an Orchestra class for students in third grade and higher,
as well as a Percussion class for students in 4th and 5th grades. Both of these classes are held at Campus Middle School on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Please contact Mrs. Merrihew for additional information at dmerrihew@cherrycreekschools.org.
