Physical Education Curriculum
Kdg - 5th Grades
In P.E. class our main goal is for all children to fully participate and experience success in a wide variety of activities. Our K-5 P.E. program emphasizes development of body awareness, motor skills and fitness, basic health concepts, safety, personal and social values such as self-discipline, perseverance, sportsmanship, fair play, honesty, courtesy and cooperation with others. A successful experience in physical education should contribute to a positive self-concept and develop a desire to be physically active throughout life.
Children in Kdg-2nd will participate in movement games, ball skills related to passing, throwing, kicking, catching, dribbling, hitting and rolling, parachute play, gymnastics and apparatus, manipulatives such as beanbags, jumping ropes, scooters and hoops.
The 3rd-5th program continues to emphasize the skills learned in the primary years in games such as mini-soccer, basketball, volleyball, and touch rugby. Basic concepts and strategies related to team play are introduced and gradually expanded. Other activities will include: gymnastics, health related fitness and nutrition activities, Fitnessgram pacer test, pedometers, introduction to orienteering, rope skipping, short tennis, track and field and other recreational games.
Our “Safe Routes to Homestead Program” aims to increase awareness about the importance of walking and bicycling to school and to encourage students and parents to stay active and healthy by bicycling and walking more. You will find more detailed information about this program on separate webpage links.
Children are required to participate in all physical education activities. If children are excused from P.E., a note from the parents or guardian is required stating the reason for non-participation.
We want P.E. to be a fun, positive and safe experience for everyone. Therefore, children must wear proper sports shoes (low heel, proper ankle support, laces or velcro) and dress in comfortable clothes (socks, shorts or sweatpants, T-shirt, sweatshirt or wind breaker) appropriate and safe for movement and activity.
On the pages below you find info about intramurals, field day and a list of some of my favorite health and nutrition books, magazines and websites.
P.E. Game Plan
Never settle for less than your best, so always
Play and try hard.
Play safe and smart.
Play fair and be a good sport.
Respect your peers, teachers and equipment.
Do what you are expected to do and stay on task, even if no one is looking.
“All parts of the body which have a function if used in moderation and exercised in labors in which each is accustomed, become thereby healthy, well developed and age more slowly, but if unused they become liable to disease, defective in growth and age quickly.”
~Hippocrates~

FIELD DAY

On field day our Grade 5 students take part in a community service project and function as the activity leaders and team leaders for their younger friends in Kindergarten and Grades 1 & 2.
Kindergarten & Grade 1 9:00-10:45am
Grades 2 & 3 11:00am-1:00pm

Thank you to the parents who already signed up to volunteer for field day. We still need more helping hands that day and you will have another opportunity to sign up at PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES during the first week of March.
Thank you again for helping to make field day an enjoyable experience for all children.
