MEAL PRICE INCREASE

For next school year (beginning July 1, 2012) there will be a $0.10 per meal price increase at lunch; breakfast prices will remain unchanged. The price increase at lunch is due to new regulations established by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) ensuring price equity in the National School Lunch Program. These new regulations require that meal prices be established so that the price of a purchased meal is equal to the government reimbursement received for free/reduced meals.

Meal prices for school year 2012-13 will be as follows:

Breakfast: $1.40      Lunch: $2.55

STUDENTS SHARE STORIES OF SURVIVAL

April 2012
From abuse to abandonment, from drugs to depression, from the serious illness of a parent to their own battles with life-threatening injuries and diseases, they have suffered the unimaginable. They have experienced things no one especially a child should have to experience. But most importantly, they have beaten the odds and overcome incredible challenges, often with the help and support of a special teacher, coach or counselor.

At the April 9 Parents Council meeting, seniors from several Cherry Creek high schools, shared powerful stories of perseverance, leaving many in the audience wiping away tears. Continued on Your Hub at denverpost.com.

LONG RANGE FACILITY PLANNING COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION

The Long Range Facility Planning Committee unanimously recommended that the Cherry Creek School District Board of Education call for a bond issue for renovation, new technology, and security; Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) focused facilities; and building additions, across the district at the board's regular meeting March 12, 2012.

The $125 million bond issue would be used, in part, to fund expansions at Cherokee Trail and Grandview high schools where enrollment already exceeds capacity. Thirty-seven million dollars also would be used for renovations and upgrades to security cameras, electrical, fire protection, HVAC and plumbing at all schools. "These maintenance projects are just like the ones people do to keep up their homes," Assistant Superintendent of Educational Support Services Scott Siegfried said. "They will help ensure that schools remain safe places for students to learn."

The LRFPC is a citizens advisory group, established by the Cherry Creek Schools Board of Education more than 30 years ago. It is made up of district residents and employees who advise the board on facility utilization including construction, renovation, boundary and calendar issues. The committee is responsible for making sure new schools are built just when they're needed to handle student growth, and ensuring that existing schools are maintained and improved to protect the taxpayer's investment.

Five high schools – Cherry Creek, Cherokee Trail, Eaglecrest, Grandview and Smoky Hill – will receive funds for classroom and equipment renovations for STEM programming. Overland High School received funds for a STEM focused addition from the 2008 bond issue.

"At least 90% of all jobs in the future will require technical education," Siegfried said. "We need 21st Century classrooms to support 21st Century learning." The committee recommended the expansions at the high schools rather than building a new high school, which would have cost $125 million, the same amount as the all of the other bond projects combined.

The district recently refinanced some of its existing bond debt for a savings to taxpayers of $4 million. Cherry Creek has an extremely strong credit, as evidenced by the Aa1/AA ratings assigned by Moody's and Standard & Poor's, respectively. The bond issue would not result in a property tax increase, Chief Financial Officer Guy Bellville said.

The Board of Education will consider the recommendation and decide whether to call for a November election at its April 16, 2012 meeting. View the entire recommendation on the Cherry Creek Schools website at www.cherrycreekschools.org.

OHS SENIORS MEET WITH SUPERINTENDENT AND COMMUNITY LEADERS

Overland seniors Yonas Ambaye, Al Castro-Cid and Lamin Sonko were guests of Cherry Creek School District's Superintendent Mary Chesley at a recent meeting of community leaders. Colorado's Future: Building a Better Colorado Through Civic Engagement is a group of civic leaders who are working to encourage greater civility and participation in Colorado society. Members of the group include superintendents from neighboring school districts, Chamber of Commerce presidents, members of the State Board of Education and citizen leaders.

The task of the meeting was to identify how best to use the initiative and referendum process in Colorado, so that the people of the state have a more effective voice. The group was broken up into smaller round table discussion groups who worked to come to a consensus on a variety of issues related to the Colorado political process. The goal of the meeting was to create a non-partisan mechanism that can be used to help solve some of Colorado's most pressing problems. Overland's principal Leon Lundie and social studies teacher Eliza Hamrick accompanied the students and also participated in the discussion.

Mr. Lundie commented, "What a great opportunity for our students to be part of a grass root political process. Without a doubt Cherry Creek School District was well represented by these three young men."

Ms. Chelsey was very pleased with Mr. Ambaye, Mr. Castro-Cid and Mr.Sonko, whom she referred to as "the incredible next generation." Ms. Chesley commented further, "Each of the young men was thoughtful and had a rich basis of understanding upon which to contribute to the Civic Engagement conversation. I am assured, once again, that the future is in good hands!"

CALLING SYSTEM KEEPS PARENTS INFORMED

Keeping parents informed – especially during unusual or emergency situations – is a top priority for the Cherry Creek School District. That's why the district and its schools have been using the Blackboard Connect parent notification system since early 2009.

The district and its schools use the system to let parents know about unusual situations, such as a lockdown or secure perimeter, or when buses have been delayed because of police activity in a certain area, as well as weather delays and closures.

Schools also use the system to let parents know about important educational issues including their child's attendance, homework and parent-teacher conferences, as well as school events like field trips and family nights.

"We know parents want direct and up-to-date information when it comes to their children," said Superintendent Mary Chesley. "We are fortunate to have a tool that allows us to provide information to parents in a direct and timely manner."

Non-emergency calls are sent to parents' primary number, usually their home number. Emergency calls are sent to all numbers listed on students' emergency contact cards, usually home, cell and work numbers.

Parents can select which number they list as their primary number. Parents, who prefer not to receive early morning weather calls on their home phone, can designate a cell phone number as their primary number, then turn that cell phone off or to silent on nights when the forecast calls for bad weather.

Parents can change their primary number and update other numbers that may have changed, by contacting their children's schools.

NATIONAL SCHOOL BREAKFAST WEEK

March 5 - 9, 2012

School Breakfast – Go for Gold!

Mark your calendars! National School Breakfast Week is coming up March 5-9, 2012. We are encouraging all students to join us and would love for parents to come for breakfast at your student’s school during this week and anytime. This week will showcase brand new breakfast entrees and a variety of fresh fruit. Students also have the chance to win prizes that encourage them to be active. Get in on the action and see the exciting changes that are happening in our school meal program.

A healthy breakfast is the best way to kick-start your child’s school day and let them shine! So, don’t let being crunched for time or out of milk keep your child from eating breakfast! A healthy breakfast is available each day at each of our schools. With a healthy breakfast in their stomach, students are more attentive, more energized, and better able to concentrate in school. If there’s no time at home, try having breakfast at school. Furthermore, research shows that school breakfast boosts test scores, improves classroom behavior and reduces trips to the nurse’s office.

Help us celebrate the most important meal of the day during this special week. We invite you to join your students at school for breakfast to see what school breakfast is all about and try the special, new menu items. Tell us what you think of these new items that will be a part of next year’s breakfast menu.

Breakfast Week Menu
Monday - Cheese Omelet
Tuesday - Yogurt Parfait
Wednesday - Turkey Sausage and Cheese Breakfast Sandwich
Thursday - Oatmeal Breakfast Round
Friday - Cinnamon Roll with Turkey Sausage Patty

For students who qualify for the free and reduced price meal program, breakfast is available at no charge each day. For all others breakfast is available for $1.30 at elementary and $1.40 at secondary. Students choose from a variety of entrée choices and each breakfast includes milk.

Remember breakfast is available every day – not just during National School Breakfast Week!

OVERLAND PAIRS WITH JOHNS HOPKINS

January 6, 2012
Overland was proud to host visitors from Children's Hospital and Johns Hopkins University on Friday, January 6. Professors Paritosh Kaul and Lindsay Thompson presented three international students who are collaborating on a project. The students are part of Johns Hopkins's MBA program and are preparing a model for a school-based health clinic. Since Overland plans to house such a clinic in the future, these students chose to visit our campus and get a feel for our community.

A school-based health clinic would allow for students to receive services such as physicals needed for athletics and required immunization shots, all free of charge.

Johns Hopkins has only recently (2007) added a business school and MBA program to its course of study. The university stipulates that its business program focuses on creating wealth for human flourishing, not for greed. Students take courses in "Innovation for Humanity," "Business Skills," and "Experiential Learning." Then they must work with a for-profit or a non-profit organization on a project that will benefit humanity.

OVERLAND SENIOR HONORED AT JACK & JILL BEAUTILLION

December 20, 2011

Zachary Buchanan, an Overland senior, was one of many young men who were honored at the 28th Annual Jack & Jill Beautillion.

The Beautillion began as an attempt to combat negative stereotypes regarding African American male by showcasing high school seniors who are honor students, class presidents, athletes and committed young men who are dedicated to serving their community and country through volunteerism.

Young men who have the honor of being recognized for their efforts in achieving excellence are selected as Beaus for this formal event. Since its inception, the beautillion continues to recognize a small sampling of youth that defy the odds and dispel stereotypes.

The Denver Post describes the accomplishments of all the young men. An excerpt from the article, featuring Overland's Zachary Buchanan, is printed below.

ZACHARY DWAYNE BUCHANAN
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Brian and Claudette Buchanan and is a senior at Overland High School. He is the consummate leader and has been praised for his help inside and outside of the classroom. He takes great pride in setting high goals for himself and mapping out a plan to achieve them. That strategic thinking will come in handy as he pursues his dream of working in the architectural design industry. He has a steadfast commitment to excellence and to his family. These character traits are sure to take him far in life. He plans to attend the University of Colorado at Boulder. Zachary’s escort is Tyra Ronai Davis.

National Honor Society met on December 15 to put together kits for patients at Children's Hospital. These are activity kits that contain a variety of things for children to do if they are unable to leave their rooms. Examples are coloring books, magazines, friendship bracelet kits, etc. NHS will also use this meeting time to make tie-together fleece blankets for the patients, as hospitals are not able to reuse them from patient to patient.

Student Council collected canned goods from December 12 - 16.

FCCLA (Family, Community, and Career Leaders of America) displayed the "Giving Tree" in our main office. This tree, benefiting Families First, contained ornaments that represent children who needed Christmas gifts. The tags indicated the child's age and gender. Students and faculty chose an ornament, purchased a gift for the child, and placed it under the tree.

Pre-Med Club visited the Children's Hospital in November to work on Thanksgiving crafts with patients and visiting children.

CAFETERIA OFFERING HEALTHIER CHOICES

December 2011

Cherry Creek Food and Nutrition Services is dedicated to offering our students the healthiest choices possible. Each day, we offer a wide variety of fruit and vegetable options, knowing how important these foods are to a healthy diet. Until now, we have offered a 4 oz. cup of orange juice as one of these options each day at both breakfast and lunch. While juice provides some of the same essential nutrients that whole fruits do, it does not offer the fiber that whole fruit does and is more calorie-dense. In the small quantity that 100% fruit juice is offered, it is healthy option; however, we also feel it is important to encourage students to eat a wide variety of whole fruits and vegetables most often to ensure that they are receiving the essential nutrients that these choices offer. To achieve this, we will gradually decrease how often orange juice is offered as a fruit option at lunch. Orange juice will continue to be offered as part of breakfast each day.

In addition to encouraging students to choose and try a wider variety of fruits and vegetables, decreasing how often juice is offered as a fruit option aligns our offerings with the new guidelines outlined in the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. These guidelines are aimed at ensuring the healthiest school meals possible are offered to students.

We believe this is the best choice for students and would like to make the transition gradually. The following stages will be followed in decreasing juice offerings:
  • Starting in January 2012, orange juice will be offered as a fruit option three times per week, during lunch on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. An alternate juice may be available to purchase a la carte as a beverage option.
  • In August 2012, orange juice will be offered as a fruit option two times per week, during lunch, on Tuesday and Thursday. An alternate juice may be available to purchase a la carte as a beverage option.
  • Starting in January 2013, orange juice will only be offered a la carte as a beverage option.
If a student does not drink milk and takes the juice as a beverage, please know that drinking water is available each day in each cafeteria. In addition, as stated above, an alternate juice is available for a la carte purchase if a student or family chooses. Again, orange juice will continue to be offered each day at breakfast. Please feel free to contact Food and Nutrition Services at 720-886-7169 if you have any questions.

Teaching the Value of Character and Leadership

In honor and appreciation of Veterans on November 11, 2011, we will have retired Air Force Colonel and Chaplain, Dr. Phil Miller, as the guest speaker at the November PIN meeting.

Making leaders is more than giving an individual the opportunity to lead. Leadership is valued for both competence and character. Teaching the qualities of leadership involves understanding the themes of integrity, excellence and service. Learn the importance of building character and promoting an ethical culture for raising tomorrow’s leaders. Discover what character aspects will help your child be a better leader and citizen of the world.

Our speaker, Phil Miller, PhD, a retired Colonel and Chaplain, with 26 years in the Air Force Reserve, and the current Executive Director of TLC Meals on Wheels, will discuss the importance of teaching leadership, with strong character values being the most important element to instill in future leaders.

Following our November meeting we are sponsoring an Artisan Fair, with a wide variety of vendors selling crafts and services. The Artisan Fair will be a great way to start your holiday shopping! The Fair will be in the SARC building from 11:30-2:30 p.m. All proceeds will go to funding the PIN/Sherry Sargent Scholarship. Plan to stay after the presentation and shop!

Presentations are free and are held the first Tuesday of each month at the Student Achievement Resource Center (SARC).

CareLine.jpg

CCSD CARE LINE HAS NEW LOOK, SAME IMPORTANT PURPOSE

PHONE: 720.554.2273
EMAIL: CARELINE@CHERRYCREEKSCHOOLS.ORG

After the 1999 tragedy at Columbine High School, the Cherry Creek School District established the Care Line (720-554-2273 or careline@cherrycreekschools.org) as part of its ongoing school safety efforts, which emphasize the importance of prevention, positive school climate, and physical and psychological safety measures.

“Nothing is more important than the safety of our students, our staff members, and our families,” said Superintendent Mary Chesley. “The academic excellence that exists in our district stems from the fact that people are safe and feel safe in our schools, allowing them to focus on teaching and learning.”

In the past 12 years, the Care Line has been used by many students, parents and community members to report potentially dangerous behavior or unsafe situations. Reports can be made anonymously. Last year, about one-third of Care Line calls or emails involved conflict situations. Another third were related to suicidal thoughts or behaviors and the final third related to a variety of issues including drugs/alcohol, potential cyber crimes, threats and weapons.

To increase awareness of the Care Line, the district used funds from a Safe and Drug Free Schools grant to create posters, magnets, stickers and business cards highlighting the Care Line.

“We want students, parents and community members to know this resource is available to them,” said Dr. Scott Siegfried, Assistant Superintendent, Educational Support Services. “We encourage them to share concerns directly with an administrator, teacher or counselor in a face-to-face manner, if possible. However, we know there are times when they may not feel comfortable doing that and want an anonymous reporting option.”

Director of Safety and Security, Randy Councell said it’s also important to know when to call 911 instead of the Care Line. “In an emergency or life and death situation, call 911, not the Care Line.”

When a call or email comes in to the Care Line, a team of district administrators and safety and security personnel are alerted to the message and read the email or listen to the phone call. The situation is investigated in a variety of ways depending upon the nature of the information.

For instance, if the reporting party leaves contact information, safety and security will call them back to obtain any additional pertinent information. Local authorities may be asked to conduct a welfare check. Parents and the principal of any involved school may also be contacted. District mental health experts and the crisis response team also become involved if needed.

“The Care Line is an important part of our comprehensive commitment to safe, respectful and inclusive learning environments,” said Janise McNally, Wellness Coordinator for Cherry Creek Schools. “It’s another way we can work together to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students, staff, families and community.”

Using the Collaborative Problem Solving Approach: Think Differently About Your Children

The Collaborative Problem Solving Model is a proactive approach that looks at children’s behavior differently from conventional wisdom. CPS is based on the philosophy that children do well if they can, instead of “children do well if they want to”. Understanding children from this perspective shifts our focus away from blaming the child for their behaviors, to understanding what a child’s behavior is telling us about the skills they may be lacking. We can then work with the child to teach them the skills they need to learn in order for them to be more successful and meet our expectations.

Dr. Lisa Wolff, CCSD psychologist and instructor for Parent Academy classes, will share the CPS model as an approach for solving problems and building relationships with kids of all ages. The Collaborative Problem Solving approach is currently being used in the Cherry Creek School District with kids at all grade levels, and with a wide array of behavioral needs.

Plan ahead to take a little time out of your day or take a few hours off of work and come to connect with other parents, be informed by local and national speakers, and get empowered to take a proactive approach to parenting.
