outstanding student performance.
A few of the academic programs we use:
Science: FOSS (Full Option Science System) is a research based, hands-on science curriculum. With FOSS, students are learning science by doing science. Students learn science content and process by constructing ideas through their own inquiries, investigations and analyses. FOSS integrates reading, writing, mathematics, speaking and listening. Students are learning basic skills through science content.
Writing: Lucy Calkins Units of Study is a rigorous yearlong writing curriculum, which provides students with opportunities to write daily for their own purposes. During a Writer’s Workshop, students work within a community of writers in order to become thinkers and composers of meaning. During writing, students are immersed in high quality literature to study how authors write, select their own topics for writing and learn skills and strategies of effective writing as they regularly cycle through the writing process.
Reading: Reading instruction is provided through a balanced approach that emphasizes comprehension, word study and fluency. Teachers use authentic text to provide explicit instruction on strategies and skills of effective readers. Teachers meet with students during individual conferences or within small strategy groups to provide individualized instruction based on the needs of students. Students are provided large chunks of time to read daily and respond to their reading in a variety of ways.
Math: Everyday Mathematics curriculum is designed to help students learn more mathematical content and become life-long mathematical thinkers. This curriculum creates a balance between whole group instruction and small group or partner work. Students are working on real life problem solving while practicing basic skills in a variety of ways. There is an emphasis on communication. Students are encouraged to explain their mathematical thinking while learning from others.
