Performing Arts
Course descriptions for all Performing Arts courses are listed on pages 39-43 of the 2010-2011 Program of Studies.  Smoky Hill offers courses in the following areas:

Band The Band Department at Smoky Hill strives to maintain a balanced program in all facets of music education including the development of the individual musician.  Students have the opportunity to play in one of three concert ensembles, one jazz ensemble and one percussion class while studying band at Smoky Hill.

In addition to the above course offerings there are also opportunities to participate in marching band, pep band, pit orchestra and other outside chamber music ensembles.
Choir The Choral Department consists of eight choirs, incorporating approximately 300 students.  Of the eight choirs offered, six are auditioned, with one ensemble being extracurricular.  While the program is developed around classical training and growth, the choral staff also believes in variety, and every ensemble performs music from a very multicultural and diverse repertoire.

The diversity of the program, and the variety of opportunities given to students, continues to set a goal to maintain a level of excellence in both solo and ensemble performances.  Nearly 50 students in the program are enrolled in a second choral ensemble course.  The choir has a long history and tradition of excellence.
Dance The Dance Program at SHHS offers several levels of proficiency, from beginner to advanced.  All classes are assigned as PE credits, however, advanced level courses have the choice of being considered PE or Fine Arts Credits.  The Dance Program is instructed by Lisa Wood, who directs the All-School Musical and an annual auditioned Dance Recital, the Dance Showcase.

In an experimental research study of high school age students, those who studied dance scored higher than non-dancers on measures of creative thinking, especially in the categories of fluency, originality and abstract thought.  Whether dancers can use their original abstract thinking skills in other disciplines is an important area of exploration.
Orchestra The Smoky Hill HS Orchestra program consists of a comprehensive performance-based curriculum which uses traditional and standard repertoire to teach technique, musicality and music theory through the study of string instruments.

The Orchestra Program consists of two orchestras: String Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra.  Both groups perform at least four times per year and are under the direction of Ms. Chelsea Peele.  An extra-curricular Chamber Ensemble Club meets after school as per designated by Ms. Peele to rehearse for performances throughout the year.
Theatre The Drama program at Smoky Hill strives to give any interested student an opportunity to learn about and excel in the art or practice of producing dramatic works.  Whether by taking one of four levels of theatre classes, including IB Theater and Technical Theater, or by performing in one of five all-school productions annually, most students should be able to fill their dramatic interests.
