Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader™ is a user-friendly computer-based program that encourages many children to read. All Willow Creek students in grades two through five may participate in the program. It is a popular program with many of our students and can assist with reading comprehension. Students read books and take tests on any of the networked computers throughout the building.

Chess Club

Chess Club is an after-school activity run by parent volunteers in the library. Students learn the fundamentals of the game and compete with each other.

Foreign Language

The Foreign Language Program is an extracurricular activity sponsored by the PTO. Classes in French, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese are offered to students in kindergarten through fifth grade. These classes meet once a week before school or after school. Questions regarding the program should be referred to the Program Coordinator.

For the 2011-12 school year, French will be offered on Monday mornings, 8:00-8:45 am; Chinese will be held on Tuesday mornings, 8:00-8:45 am; and Spanish will be offered at two levels. Spanish for K-2 students will be Wednesday mornings, and the class for grades 3-5 will be Friday mornings, both at 8:00-8:45 am.

Kids, Ink

Kids, Ink. is a newspaper written by children for children.  Members of Kids, Ink. work throughout the year to write articles about Willow Creek happenings.  They also create game pages, comic strips, interesting fact bulletins, and develop surveys that are important to Willow Creek students.  Throughout the year, members will research topics of interest, cover school events, set-up interviews, edit and electronically publish newspapers.

Third, fourth and fifth grade students meet every other week, as they gain newspaper background knowledge, learn how to interview, write articles, edit, and publish their very own newspaper. In addition to the meetings, Kids, Ink. members have to make the time commitment to work on their individual articles outside of school. This unscheduled time may include setting up and completing interviews, writing drafts, meeting with other newspaper members, and gathering information and research for future articles. While Kids, Ink. members work very hard, they also have a great time.

MADD Hatters

The "MADD" in MADD Hatters stands for Music, Art, Drama and Dance. MADD Hatters is one of our most popular programs for fourth and fifth graders and is sponsored by our teachers and staff. Students participate in plays, create scenery and costumes, and run the lighting system. MADD Hatters meets after school and produces a musical each year.

Multicultural Club

Under the guidance of our PTO, parent volunteers provide our students with a variety of multicultural experiences after school. Our volunteers coordinate an "overseas trip," whereby students meet in a classroom to board a "plane" that takes them to their destination. While on board, passengers enjoy food that is native to the country they are going to visit. The flight also includes an in-flight movie that depicts facts about their travel destination. Flight attendants provide passengers with interesting facts about the country they are going to visit. Upon arrival, travelers visit representatives from the country. With the representatives, visitors indulge in art activities, games, and music. At the end of the school year, students meet and sample more food, play more games, and participate in more activities from around the world. We are very appreciative of the many hours that our parent volunteers spend to provide these wonderful multicultural experiences.

Student Council

Student Council meetings are established in the beginning of the school year. It is open to any student, grades 3-5, interested in working together for Willow Creek. In the past, these students have participated in several community service projects, raised funds to purchase items for the school, shown appreciation for staff and teachers, communicated important information to their peers, and helped develop and encourage school pride and spirit. For more information, check out Student Council's webpage.
