Supporting Learning through Assistive Technology
WHAT IS SWAAAC?
SWAAAC stands for Statewide Alternative Augmentative Assistive Communication. SWAAAC teams provide expert, multi-disciplinary Assistive Technology services to enable students with disabilities full access and participation in all educational opportunities.
WHAT IS ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY?
Assistive Technology (AT) is any tool that helps people function more effectively at home, school, work or play. For some students, AT is the lifeline that provides them with equal access to information and learning in the classroom and the world.
WHO USES ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY?
Students with disabilities that interfere with their communication, learning, social relationships, mobility, and active participation are potential users of AT.
HOW DO I ACCESS MY SWAAAC TEAM?
Any member of an Individual Education Plan team may initiate a referral to the SWAAAC team. A referral form that documents the concerns of the team must be completed. Referral forms are available in the Special Education handbook. Please contact your special education team for copies of these forms. An evaluation will be scheduled by the SWAAAC team, including some or all of the following: students, parents, special educators, general educators, speech/language pathologist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, pyschologist, and/or school nurse. There is no specific test for evaluating the need for AT. The assessment will be tailored to the unique needs of each student.
