Is it true that CT Pre-IB and IB students study all the time and have no time for other activities?
Posted by:No, not true! CT Pre-IB and IB students participate in all aspects of the high school community. When interviewed, they confirm that they organize their time the best when they have at least one activity (e.g., club, band, tutoring, or community service) and/or one sport.
-
Can 9th and 10th grade students participate in the CT Pre-IB program?
Posted by:Yes, they can if they have completed all of the application processes and have been accepted into the program. The CT Pre-IB program begins with the 9th grade so that students will be prepared to enter the 11th grade as an IB diploma candidate.
-
Can students join IB after 9th or 10th grade?
Posted by:Yes. Qualified students can apply to join CT Pre-IB or IB up to the beginning of the junior year.
-
How many tests must IB Diploma students take and pass with a 4 or better junior and/or senior year?
Posted by:Six tests. Three at the Higher Level, three at the Standard Level, or four at the Higher Level, two at the Standard Level. A student may take up to two IB exams as a junior, depending on their chosen IB path.
-
When do IB students take the IB exams?
Posted by:A maximum of two tests may be taken in the 11th grade, or all six tests may be taken at the end of the senior year. NO student may take an IB test in the sophomore year.
-
What other requirements must be met in order to receive the IB Diploma?
Posted by:Students must complete 3 other components. These are the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) class, the creativity, activity, service (CAS) component and the 4,000 words extended essay (EE) on a topic of special interest to the student. (Refer to the website www.ibo.org for further information)
-
What is the Extended Essay (EE)?
Posted by:The EE is a 4,000 word, in-depth study of a subject chosen by the IB student in the junior year of IB. IB students will NOT receive an IB diploma unless they complete the EE. The EE grade also appears on Power School and is, therefore, available for parents to assess the progress of students. Completion of the EE is an IB requirement for the Diploma program, and CTHS has created a week-long summer camp for students as a guideline to accomplish successfully this piece of the IB hexagon.

What is an Internal Assessment (IA)? How does it differ from an External Assessment?
Posted by:Each IB class has an IA which must be completed before the student can receive a mark (1-7) from IBO for the course. For example, the IA in a spoken Language B is an oral presentation with the classroom teacher present and counts 30% of the student's mark. The IA gives the classroom teacher input into the student's final mark for the class. The IB Programme is different from any other program in the world because of the requirements of the IA (teacher input), the Theory of Knowledge course, the Extended Essay, and the CAS (creativity, action, and service) requirements. The External Assessments take place between April 29 and May 25 each year; they are written and graded by examiners located throughout the world.
-
Is it possible to resit (retake) an exam if the student is unhappy with the results?
Posted by:The student may resit (retake) an exam the next year if unhappy with the mark that s/he receives.
-
Can 11th and 12th grade students take classes in any of the baccalaureate programs at CTHS?
Posted by:Yes. They can take IB electives.
