Reading and Writing:
Our reading curriculum is grounded in the elements of balanced literacy. Students are actively engaged in the process of reading and writing on a daily basis. Our reading and writing curriculum is based on Lucy Calkins Reading and Writing Units of Study. This structure uses a workshop model where students are introduced to a mentor text or an explicit teaching point during the mini-lesson and then independently practice in their own reading and writing. Partner reading and Book Clubs are also a component of the reading time. During that independent time, teachers are pulling small skills groups and conferring one on one with students.
