• Physical Education Curriculum

    Curriculum refers to the learning experiences that are provided to students in order to meet the rigorous standards in physical education/health including concepts, skills, and topics; sequence of courses; teacher-designed instructional units; instructional materials including publisher’s textbooks, literature, software, trade books and printed material; technology; media; and field trips.

    Elementary Curriculum

    A physical education/health program will be provided each year for all students in Kindergarten through Grade 5. Physical education/health is designed so that the student will be exposed to a variety of activities that enhance physical fitness and skill development. Proficiency is achieved through fitness-related activities and the application of skills to game situations. Students will learn the value of regular physical activity and its relationship to concepts that are covered in health class.

    Secondary Curriculum

    At the middle level, physical education/health is designed so that students will continue to be exposed to a variety of activities that enhance physical fitness and skill development with increasing rigor. Proficiency is achieved through fitness-related activities and the application of skills to game situations. Students apply learned skills to team sports and begin to explore recreational and lifelong fitness activities. Students are encouraged to maintain an active lifestyle at school and outside the school environment. Students will learn the value of regular physical activity and its relationship to concepts which are covered in health class.

    In grades nine through twelve, program offerings will be provided to enable students to meet graduation requirements and to select physical education/health electives. At the high school level proficiency is achieved through fitness-related activities and the application of skills to game situations. During the high school years, students continue to refine and apply learned skills to team sports and continue to explore recreational and lifelong fitness activities. Students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of indoor and outdoor team sports, lifetime and leisure activities, outdoor pursuits and personal physical fitness programs. Students will learn the value of regular physical activity and its relationship to concepts that are covered in health class.

    Students are required to have 2.0 units of study in the Physical Education to graduate from the Cherry Creek School District. This includes .5 units of Health. Student athletes who have completed a season of athletics may be granted a one-time waiver of .5 of the required 1.5 units of physical education. This waiver does not reduce the total number of units required for graduation. Students must submit an Academic/Physical Education Waiver Requests on form IKF-2-E.
