Welcome to West Middle School, home of the amazing Wildcats!
I am Mónica García, proud Principal of WMS.
At West, we believe that each day brings a new opportunity to learn and grow, and our goal each day is to provide every student with the most engaging and rigorous academic experience possible, so that as lifelong learners, our students will maximize their potential to lead a fulfilling life.
Our WMS mission guides us in this work.
By design, we are Excellence and Opportunity, Support and Collaboration, Sincerity and Inspiration.
Through the hard work and commitment of our staff and the support of our parent community and the District, we are able to provide a safe, nurturing, respectful and inclusive learning environment in which our students explore and develop their unique talents and gifts.
At WMS, our students and staff strive to demonstrate CARE: Citizenship, Achievement, Respect, and Equity in all that we do every day. As Principal, I am honored to lead this work in collaboration with students, staff, families, and the community.
As we enter our fifty-third year of excellence at WMS, some of the traditions and expectations that began all the way back in 1966, when Cherry Creek West Middle School first opened its doors, are still in place today. Buddy Days still take place every spring, as we welcome our incoming sixth graders for their first official visit to WMS. When West was designed in 1965-1966, the focus was on student learning, with input gathered from students, teachers, and parents to ensure forward-thinking design. That same focus and essential input guided the design and planning of our new innovation space that will debut this fall. Thanks to our amazing community support with the passing of the innovation bond in 2016, we will welcome back students for the 2019-2020 school year with the grand opening of the Design Hub. In this state of the art space, our students will learn through collaboration and problem solving, in support of our efforts to provide learning experiences that are relevant beyond the walls of the school.
So as we continue to write our WMS story, I invite you to partner with us during your child’s educational journey—it is sure to be a fantastic ride! Stop by any time—my door is always open, and I look forward to your visit. Thank you for being a part of this wonderful community!
All my best,
Degrees and Certifications:
Mrs. Monica Garcia
I am a native Coloradoan. I grew up in Westminster and spent most of my childhood playing sports and the clarinet. I attended college in state and met my husband coaching high school basketball. We have been married for 26 years and have three wonderful sons. Our oldest son, Ken, is an avid skier and lives and works in Breckenridge. Our middle son, Austin, just graduated from the University of Kansas, with a degree in Journalism and Sports Media, and a minor in Business. Our youngest son, Gunnar, is a freshman at the University of Northern Colorado and is a Biology/Pre-Vet major. While they were growing up, my favorite thing to do was watch them play football, basketball, and baseball. We spent nearly every weekend on the field, the court, or the diamond, and I loved it! Besides sports and school, my other love is animals, especially dogs. I have a big Black Lab named Nitro who loves to play and eat!
Before coming to West Middle School, I was an Assistant Principal at Horizon Middle School and Brush Middle school for seven years. Before becoming an administrator, I taught high school and middle school Spanish, Language Arts, and ELL for twelve years. I absolutely love the energy in middle school and the fantastic students and families here at West!
