Core Academics Overview
AVID
-
AVID is an academic elective offered to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who fit the guidelines established by national AVID standards. It teaches students the necessary strategies to be successful in both middle and high school, with college being the ultimate goal. Students are supported through rigorous coursework to adequately prepare them to take advanced classes in middle school and Advanced Placement courses in high school. Participants receive instruction in writing, note-taking, studying, test-taking strategies, time-management, and textbook reading. Students also receive opportunities to explore fields related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Participation is contingent on solid evidence of prior achievement. Students in the AVID program must maintain a 2.2 or higher GPA to meet the academic profile of an AVID student.
Students interested in AVID must complete an AVID application. Applicants will be screened for:
- Average to high test scores (PARCC/CMAS/MAP/Aspire)
- 2.2 - 3.5 GPA (Grade Point or Academic Status Average)
