What AVID is…
The mission of AVID is to ensure that ALL students, and most especially the least served students who are in the middle will succeed in rigorous curriculum, will complete a rigorous college preparatory path and will become educated and responsible participants and leaders in society.
-AVID is an acronym that stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination
-AVID is an in-school academic support program that helps prepare students for college eligibility and success. It is an academic regularly scheduled elective class. It focuses on academic instruction, writing strategies, organizational skills, reading support, tutorial support and motivational activities.
-AVID prepares academically average students for advanced classes
-AVID is NOT an INTERVENTION class, but does offer support for those students in the academic middle
The AVID student…
The AVID student is in the academic middle: A, B and even an occasional C student who has the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. These are students who are capable of completing rigorous curriculum but are falling short of their potential. AVID helps to put these students on the college track: acceleration instead of remediation. Students are accepted into the AVID program after completing the application process. State test scores, grades, citizenship, attendance, teacher recommendations, desire and determination, historically underrepresented in 4-year colleges, economically disadvantaged, and other special circumstances are all considered for acceptance into the program.
