Dear High Plains Community,

It is with great pride and enthusiasm that I write this letter to you. I am extremely honored to join the High Plains school community as your new Principal! I look forward to building relationships with each of you and working with the staff and community to provide the best educational experience for all students. I believe there is no better way to enhance the lives of students than to shape their understanding of their own abilities and talents.

As the child of an Air Force serviceman, I have lived many places; however, I have always considered Colorado home. I am thrilled to be a member of the High Plains community. Further, as a graduate of Overland High School, I can attest to the outstanding Cherry Creek educators that nurtured my love of learning. My personal experiences in school have led me to know the power that a strong leader can provide for a community. My goal is to share my desire and love of learning and passion with teachers and students. Also, I want to understand what makes your community exceptional and meet individuals and groups that can help me become the leader that will enhance the educational experiences of all staff and students.

My commitment to education spans generations. I learned many things from my grandparents, but one of the most critical was persistence toward an education they never had the opportunity to fulfill. For that reason, I earned an undergraduate degree from Howard University, a master’s degree from Adams State University, and I am currently in my final year as a doctoral student at the University of Colorado-Denver. While my grandparents have passed, their influence on me remains stronger than ever. I have always believed that they deserve to see an educator and leader in their lineage. Over the course of 11 years in education, I spent 6 years as a 4th and 5th grade classroom teacher as well as 3 years in a language specialist role.

On a more personal note, my family and I live in Aurora with my funny and supportive husband Chris, and an energetic dog named Ali. In my free time, I love to cook, do anything sports related and spend time with my family and friends. During the course of the year, it is my goal to truly engage in discussions with staff, community and students to be able to create a shared vision of equity and excellence. With all of us supporting each other, we will find success in many areas. As principal, my door is always open. Please feel free to come by, call, and/or email to communicate with me about anything any concerns, suggestions and ideas to help make this year a successful one!

Humbly,

Unique R. Cooper
