Degrees and Certifications:
Welcome Back Meadow Point!
Staff at Meadow Point have been working hard to prepare for your children’s 2020-2021 school year and we are all excited to get started.
Our staff are embracing all aspects of educating our students this year and we are more focused on two aspects of serving students more this year: physical safety and social emotional safety with an emphasis on racial justice. Our staff theme is “We got This.” Cornelius Minor is the author of the book “We Got This” and it can best be summed up by its subtitle: “Equity, Access, and the Quest to Be Who Our Students Need Us to Be.”
Next Thursday, your child’s teacher (first through fifth grade) will send you a welcome letter to replace the Ice Cream social we have traditionally had here at Meadow Point. In it, you will find managerial details as well as some more traditional subjects such as learning a little bit about your teacher and curriculum which will be covered throughout the year. We all know that our students’ experiences here this year will be different than years’ past, but we are all dedicated to excellence and that means creating a great experience for everyone. Another document, which I will publish on Tuesday, will provide safety details we will be following throughout the day. This will include arrival and dismissal procedures and everything in between. I can’t provide every detail, so if you are wondering about a specific aspect of our safety plans, please don’t hesitate to ask the teachers or me.
The school year will start with a Phased-In approach.
In an effort to provide support to students and staff and to ensure that everyone understands safety protocols, we will implement a gradual return to school based on the following schedule. This schedule provides four days for KG assessments. Monday 8/24 will be the first day when all students will be in the building at the same time.
* Monday, August 17th: 5th grade only
* Tuesday, August 18th: 4th grade only
* Wednesday, August 19th : 3rd grade only
* Thursday August 20th: 2nd grade only
* Friday August 21st.: KG/1st grades only
Social and Emotional Consideration
The social and emotional needs of our students will be another focus this year. Staff members are going to work to meet the students where they are and address whatever needs arise. From the senseless killings of George Floyd, Elijah McClain, Sandra Bland, Breona Taylor and more, to each students’ own lived experience, we are anticipating that this has been a difficult summer for many of our community. We will address the opportunity gap and I would like to invite parents to join me in community conversations in our PASS meetings (more information to follow). Cornelius Minor states “Anytime an operating system, like a school or a curriculum - constantly fails a specific subset of people, there is not something wrong with the people (the children). There is something wrong with the system – the institution or the curriculum.” We aim to disrupt this, and it is my intention that the pandemic will not stall our efforts.
Thank you for your partnership and for trusting us with your children every day. We will continue to work hard for them and try to do better every day. Here’s to a great 2020-2021 school year – Si Se Puede - We Got This!
