Curriculum
The curriculum encompasses the structured learning experiences designed to meet the rigorous Colorado state standards in World Languages. It includes essential concepts, skills, and topics; instructional units crafted by teachers; course sequences; and a variety of instructional materials such as published textbooks, literature, software, and authentic printed resources. Additionally, it incorporates the use of technology, media, and field trips to enhance the learning experience.
The World Languages curriculum provides a sequential program that emphasizes the four fundamental skills of language acquisition: speaking, reading, writing, and listening. These skills are integrated with contextual communication and cultural understanding. Culture is explored and analyzed through three distinct tiers: products, practices, and perspectives. This approach examines the tangible products of a culture, such as food and clothing, the ceremonies and holidays celebrated by its people, and the deeper perspectives that these elements reveal about their cultural values.
To effectively prepare students for successful post-secondary education and professional opportunities, it is strongly recommended that they engage in a rigorous academic core curriculum, including a minimum of two years of World Language study. This commitment not only enhances language proficiency but also fosters a greater appreciation for diverse cultures and communication styles.
