5A Girls Swimming: Cherry Creek wins Centennial team title
The Cherry Creek High School girls swim and dive team won the overall Centennial League A-League team championship last weekend at Arapahoe High School. The Bruins bested host Arapahoe and third-place Grandview. Cherokee Trail finished fourth. District swimmers tuned up for the State Championships later this week.
Individually, Creek took top podium spots in seven of the 12 finals events. Grandview took two top spots, as did Smoky Hill. Cherokee Trail had one top finisher.

The 5A Girls Swimming and Diving State Championships will take place on Feb. 6 and 7 at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center (VMAC) in Thornton.
5A Ice Hockey: District teams sweep the weekend
The Cherry Creek and Grandview ice hockey teams played very well this past weekend, going 4-0.
On Jan. 31, the Bruins got a four-goal second period on the way to a 5-0 win over Denver East at South Suburban. Senior Bronson Bulatovic, sophomores Liam Corcoran and Ari Gelfand, and juniors Davis Ritter and Carter Sharkey tallied for Creek. Senior goaltender Payton Mills stopped 17 Angels shots for the shutout.
Also on Friday, Grandview traveled to Monument and got a 3-2 win over host Lewis-Palmer. Wolves senior Aidan McGinty lit the lamp twice, and senior Kyle Golas had a goal in the win. Junior goaltender Linkin Alisasis made 30 saves on 32 shots.
On Saturday, Grandview kept the momentum going with a 12-2 home win over Dakota Ridge at Big Bear Ice Arena. Nine different skaters tallied in the contest. Kyle Golas had two goals, sophomore Emilio Kukic scored twice, and senior James Lembke had two. Junior Archer Arnold, senior Dylan Kukic, sophomore Carter Malak, Aidan McGinty, junior Hunter Simons and junior Tommy Wu all lit the lamp for Grandview. Freshman Noah Rooney had 11 saves on 13 shots by the Eagles. The Wolves improved to 3-11-1 on the season. Next, Grandview hosts Chaparral on Feb. 7 and Palmer on Feb. 8.
Cherry Creek completed the sweep for the district with a big 3-1 win over 2nd-ranked Monarch on the road at Blue Sports Stable in Superior on Feb. 1. Corcoran, Gelfand and senior Harry Frangiskakis found the back of the net for the Bruins, and Mills got 17 saves on 18 shots in the win. Creek improves to 10-4-2 on the campaign. Up next, CCHS is at Chatfield on Feb. 7, and hosts Ralston Valley on Feb. 8.
6A Boys and Girls B-Ball: Eaglecrest wins big Centennial showdown
The Eaglecrest High School boys basketball team went 2-0 this past week, which included a undefeated conference showdown with Overland. The Raptors defeated the Blazers 65-59 in an overtime thriller at a packed Nest on Jan. 31. Head Coach Jarris Krapcha’s charges are now 4-0 in league play, and improved to 15-2 on the season. EHS was led by senior Garrett Barger who poured in 19 points, and sophomore Kris Coleman who had 16 points in the win. The Raptors also got a conference win at home over Cherry Creek last Wednesday. Next, EHS will be on the road on Feb. 5 at Cherokee Trail.
Overland fell to 7-10 overall and 3-1 in league play with the loss. Senior Siraaj Ali had a game-high 22 points, and senior Dante Graham had 20 in the loss. The Blazers began their week with a league win over Arapahoe at home on Jan. 29. Up next, Overland is at Grandview on Wednesday.
Smoky Hill went 2-0 last week with wins at Cherokee Trail and at home against Mullen. The Buffs (9-8, 2-1) will be at Arapahoe on Feb. 5.
Grandview also went 2-0 in league play this past week. Wins at Mullen and at home over Arapahoe have the Wolves at 9-8 record overall and a 2-2 mark in the conference.
Cherry Creek (6-10, 1-3) split last week, losing to the Raptors on the road, and then getting a home win over CT on Saturday. The Bruins will resume league play on Wednesday at Mullen.
The Cougars (1-3, 8-9) went 0-2 in Centennial play last week, and will try and get back into the win column on Feb. 5 when they host the Raptors.
On the girls’ side, Grandview improved to 4-0 in conference play last week with wins at Mullen and at home against Arapahoe, defeating the Warriors 66-41. Senior Sienna Betts led all scorers with a 31-point effort in the win. The top-ranked Wolves (14-3 overall) will host Overland on Feb. 5.
The 12-5 Cherry Creek Bruins are also undefeated in league play, with wins at Eaglecrest and a come-from-behind effort at home against Cherokee Trail. Up next, the Bruins will be at Mullen on Wednesday.
The Cougars (10-7, 2-2) split games last week, defeating Smoky Hill and taking the loss at Creek. CT will host Eaglecrest on Feb. 5.
The Raptors (11-6, 2-2) are also sporting a .500 record in the Centennial League. EHS split games last week, falling to Cherry Creek at home on Wednesday, and then coming back to win over Overland at the Nest on Saturday. Eaglecrest is at Cherokee Trail on Feb. 5.
Overland and Smoky Hill both went 0-2 to stay winless in league play last week. The Trailblazers (11-6 overall) will be at Grandview on Feb. 5, while the Buffs (4-13, 0-4) host Douglas County in a non-league contest.
