Cherry Creek Students Shine at Annual K–8 Spelling Bee

the top 20 state bee qualifiers pose for a photo.

This past Friday and Saturday, 30 students competed in the Cherry Creek School District’s Annual K-8 Spelling Bee. The competition occurred in two parts; a written bee on Friday followed by the oral portion of the competition on Saturday where audience members were able to show their support. While the competition was fierce, contestants cheered each other on through every round, making the event a heartwarming celebration of literacy.

Board of Education members Angela Garland, JC Futrell, and Mike Hamrick all supported the event, with Garland and Futrell serving on the judges panel. From first round words like, “shake” to the final winning words, “Novanglian” and “en arrière”, these students prove that hard work pays off letter by letter.

Sky Vista Middle School 7th grader Audrie Landeis claimed the championship, followed closely by Greenwood Elementary 5th grader Rajvir Sabharwal in second place and Campus Middle School 6th grader Anjali Kanitkar in third. The top twenty spellers from the competition qualified to compete in the written portion of the Denver Post Colorado State spelling bee on February 19. From there, the top spellers in the state will compete in an oral bee March 7 for a chance to travel to Washington D.C. and spell in the 101st annual Scripps National Spelling Bee against the top spellers from every state.
