Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) What is AVID?AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a college readiness system that implements schoolwide instructional strategies and offers an AVID Elective class for students who have a desire and willingness to go to college but may lack resources or opportunities to be college ready.
The AVID Application Process
AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) is an elective class offered to students who would like to prepare for entrance into college. The curriculum features writing, inquiry, collaboration, reading, note-taking, study-skills and college/career activities. College students work in the classroom as tutors twice a week, and field trips are taken to visit universities. Students must commit to taking notes in class on a daily basis.Criteria taken into consideration for all applicants include: GPA, interview, citizenship, attendance, and teacher recommendations.

The AVID Elective ClassThe AVID Elective class is designed for students who are typically under-represented at the post-secondary level. In the AVID Elective Class students receive the additional academic, social, and emotional support that will help them succeed in their school’s most rigorous courses. The AVID Elective is rooted in WICOR strategies (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading).

Ms. Amanda Arellano
Amanda Arellano was born and raised in Pueblo, CO where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Colorado State University-Pueblo and a Master’s in Education Administration from Grand Canyon University. Amanda has been an educator for 11 years taking-on various leadership roles such as a department chair, parent-involvement coordinator, program coordinator, behavior interventionist as well as serving on other school and district committees. Mrs. Arellano participated in the National Institute for Latino School Leaders, Colorado Association of School Executives Leadership Development of Diverse Leaders program, and Colorado Educator Voice Fellowship. She is an educator who is passionate about being trauma-informed and equity-driven to meet the needs of ALL students so that ALL students can reach their full potential.
