• Everyone Counts: Census 2020 logo

The 2020 U.S. Census will begin in the spring, and the Cherry Creek Schools community will have a vital role to play in this important process.

The data collection process will involve everyone across the district’s 108 square miles, and it will have an important impact on Cherry Creek Schools in the coming years. Information collected from the census every 10 years provides school districts necessary federal funding and has an important impact on Colorado's voice in the U.S. Congress. By law, all information collected for the census is confidential.

Census Day is April 1. Every home in our district will receive an invitation to participate in the process online, by mail, by phone or in person. It’s important that our families know the census is legitimate, and that they can submit their information in an easy and safe way. We want to make sure the entire CCSD community is equipped with the proper tools to understand the census and play their role correctly, and we’ve assembled this list of important resources.

    What is the census?

The census counts every person living in the United States every 10 years in a process mandated in the U.S. Constitution. The data decides how more than $675 billion of federal dollars are spent in local communities. It also determines the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives. For more information about the basics of the Census in English and Spanish, view a fact sheet Census 101: What You Need to Know.

    Why is the census important?

Colorado school districts received $3.56 billion between 2011 and 2018 for federal programs like nutrition reimbursements, special education and Title 1, thanks to data collected from the census. You can see how much CCSD and other local school districts received in this Funding Disbursements document published by the Colorado Department of Education.

How can I verify if someone is a census worker?

The census workers who will be going from door to door across district this spring are required to wear valid ID badges and provide photographs and other proof of identity. For more information about census workers and their requirements, visit the United States Census 2020 website.

The Colorado Department of Public Affairs has assembled a FAQ regarding the census, with further information about the collection process, verifying legitimate census workers and making sure that all information is confidential. You can find detailed information about the entire process on the Census 2020 Frequently Asked Questions webpage.

The census is an important opportunity for our community to make their voices heard in a process that will steer the future of our cities, our state and our nation. The Cherry Creek School District has important role to play in this process, and we’re committed to making sure that every one of our families completes the census in a safe, confidential and effective way.
