Safe Gun Storage Notice for Parents

Safe gun storage is one of the most effective ways to prevent unintentional shootings, suicides, and the misuse of firearms by children and teens. By keeping guns unloaded, locked, and out of reach, families can significantly reduce the risk of gun-related injuries and deaths in the home.

Why Safe Gun Storage Matters

  • Gun violence is the leading cause of death for children and teens in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
  • Colorado state law requires that firearms be responsibly and securely stored when not in use, to prevent access by unsupervised juveniles and other unauthorized users.

Recommended Best Practices for Safe Firearm Storage

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that the safest home for a child is one without firearms. However, if you choose to keep firearms in the home, please follow these critical safety measures:

  • Store firearms unloaded, locked, and separate from ammunition.
  • Use a gun safe, lock box, or trigger lock approved for secure firearm storage.
  • Store ammunition in a locked location, separate from firearms.
  • Always keep storage keys or lock combinations hidden and inaccessible to children and teens.
  • Educate all family members about firearm safety and the importance of never touching a gun without adult supervision.

Compliance with Colorado Law

Under Colorado law, firearm owners are legally obligated to secure their weapons to prevent access by minors and unauthorized users. Failure to do so can result in criminal charges if a child gains access to a firearm and harm occurs.
