Return to In-Person Learning

  • Cimarron Community -

We have been in school for a month! New friendships have been made, communities built and the excitement has continued to build in all of our classrooms! Your children have become even more tech savvy as we have integrated technology across all grade levels. Our youngest Mustangs have jumped in and are independently navigating SeeSaw and other programs. They are learning new ways to collaborate, receiving individual feedback and support from their classroom teacher or others in the school community in a new way.  As I walk around the school, I see them sharing their ideas and new learning with their peers face to face and virtually.

We have also continued to work hard to keep the healthiest and safest learning environment possible for all of your children and our staff. We would not be where we are at without your help! Thank you for sending your children with their masks and for those of you on campus at the start or end of the day, thank you for wearing your masks. If you would like information about Cherry Creek School District’s statistics around COVID-19, please check out the CCSD Website page Forward Together 20-21. While you are there, I would also encourage you to read about Cherry Creek’s current budget and our plan to address the catastrophic budget cuts in state education funding due to the coronavirus that are threatening the Cherry Creek School District’s ability to deliver our promise of excellence for every child. The Planning Forward Budget page is intended to provide critical information about the district’s current budget situation, potential impact on schools, and steps the district is taking to address the growing fiscal crisis. If you want more information, you can also join us on our Virtual Cimarron Community Night, this Tuesday night (see information below).

We are grateful for you, for your children and for the time we get to spend with them. Thank you for trusting us. Please reach out if you have any questions or need additional supports or information.

Morning Arrival: Students are allowed to be dropped off or arrive on campus between 7:45 and 8:00 am for the start of school. Please do NOT drop off your child before 7:45 am. We do not have supervision for students prior to 7:45 am.

We do offer before care programming prior to 7:45 am and welcome families that need to use this program in order to get to work on time.

End of Day Release: If you need to pick up your child early, students will not be released for early pick-up after 2:00 pm. We know people have work, appointments and other commitments that are important to you and your family. Please plan accordingly.

Masks: It is essential that all adults and students wear a mask on campus. This includes before and after school while picking them up. If you do not have a mask, please stand off school grounds (on the sidewalk away from the school is a great option)

    Family Literacy Program:

If you are a family or know of parents, grandparents or other family members who live in a house that feeds into Cimarron Elementary, we have an amazing program where you or others in the home can learn English. This free program is sponsored by The Learning Source and has been offered at Cimarron for many years.

Reach out to Marilyn Mayorga Pelech at 720-291-1345 to learn more or email her at marilyn@thelearningsources.org

    National Hispanic Heritage Month (Latinx):

    • On the announcement each day, students are hearing about an inspirational Lantino/Latina who has impacted our world. Last week we heard about Sophie Cruz, Sylvia Mendez and Sonia Soytomeyer
    • If you have someone you would like us to share about, please feel free to email Mandy Sheets at asheets@cherrycreekschools.org

    Family Connection Meetings

If you have not heard from your child’s teacher yet, you will be hearing from them shortly. We are going to have our Family Connection Meetings again this year. You will have the chance to spend 15 minutes meeting with your child’s teacher virtually or over the phone. This is an opportunity for YOU to share about your child. The teachers will have a few questions for you to help guide your time together. We will still have (virtual) conferences in November where your child’s teacher will share with you growth and next steps for your child academically, but during our Family Connection Meetings, it is your voice that we want to hear.  Please make sure you sign up for a time with your child’s teacher.

    Safety at Cimarron

Safety is our number one priority. This year we have focused on the health of our students and staff through wearing masks, diligently washing hands and keeping our distance from others. At the same time, we are still ensuring safety through getting to know families and making sure we know who is on campus. This year, Cherry Creek Schools has adopted the Standard Response Protocol that now aligns with the language and protocols for drills across the Denver Metro area. The Standard Response Protocol comes from the I love u guys Foundation that was formed after the 2006 Platte River High School shooting. The protocol is very similar to what we have used in the past in Cherry Creek. Staff will receive ongoing training around this protocol and ways we can keep our community physically and emotionally safe.

Each year we practice a number of drills at the start of the school year and continue throughout the school year. This year all students practiced an evacuation drill, often referred to as a fire drill during the phase in week, along with one that was led by the Aurora Fire Department on Wednesday August 26th.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we will modify our Shelter drill, typically used for sheltering in place during a severe weather storm. Students will know where their classroom will go in case of severe weather and what to do, however we will not practice the actual drill this fall due to the close proximity it puts students and staff in during the drill. In the case we do need to shelter in place, your children will be ready.

Similarly, we will also make modifications to how we practice our lockdown drill this fall. Students and staff will practice this drill, however we will not have them in a corner of the room or in a small space in the room while practicing. We will be working with Cherry Creek Security to help facilitate this drill.

We know that relationships with students, families and our community are vital in keeping our students and staff safe. As we continue to improve our security measures at Cimarron and throughout the district, please feel free to reach out to Mandy Sheets with any concerns. questions or ideas.

    August 23, 2020

    Dear Cimarron Families,

What an incredible week we had last week at Cimarron! Our school was filled with laughter, excitement and joy! Our brilliant young Mustangs stepped up to model P.R.I.D.E. (Positive, Respectful, Inclusive, Dedicated and Engaged) in every aspect of their day. They did their best to keep their masks on throughout the day, asked questions, made new friends and had a blast at recess! At the end of each day, we met (virtually) as a staff to celebrate how successful the day went and the true joy we felt being with your children.

Tomorrow we will have everyone back! Please do not arrive prior to 7:45, unless you are bringing your child to Mustangs on the Move for childcare. Staff will be outside to greet your children and help them find their door to start the day. If they forgot their teacher or classroom, our staff will have lists and get them to their classroom. We will ask adults to stay on the sidewalk or behind the white lines.

Thank you for all you have done to prepare for the start to our school year. We are so excited to get everyone back together, physically distanced, of course!  Please reach out if you have questions. I will be sending out information weekly with updates and plan to host a family night to be able to answer your questions and hear from you. Until then, I look forward to connecting with you outside, over the phone or through email!

    Here we go Mustangs!

Thank you for trusting us with your amazing children.

    August 7, 2020

    Dear Cimarron Families,

It brings me great joy to be sending you this email and welcoming you to our 2020-2021 school year! I know that you have been anxiously awaiting news of how our school year will begin. After months of empty classrooms and quiet  hallways, we will soon begin to hear the laughter and joy of your children fill our school. Our journeys over the last five months have each been unique. I recognize that the racial injustices present in our world and the pandemic have shaped the conversations happening in homes and how critically important it will be to listen to the voices of our children and embed teachable moments into our classrooms. As a staff, we are committed to learning, growing, and talking about race and equity to best serve all of our students at Cimarron Elementary.

While I want to fill this letter with love and excitement, I know you are ready for the details and to move forward, planning for your children’s return. First, every single aspect of our school environment and the school day has and will continue to be approached through a lens of safety. We have also spent countless hours planning to ensure that the learning experiences are engaging, fun and bring out the joy of learning, even as students are physically distanced and wearing masks. We know this year will look different at Cimarron and at schools across our country. I can assure you that our staff is dedicated to making this great year for all of our students and community.

Due to the new routines and expectations, we are grateful that Cherry Creek School District will begin the year with a phase in approach. On Monday, August 17th, our fifth grade students will be welcomed back to Cimarron. We will celebrate the start of a new year, their last year in the building and they will begin to build strong communities within their classrooms. The following day, we will welcome our 4th grade students and provide them experiences that will launch them into the school year. Wednesday, August 19th, 3rd graders will rule the school and learn the new routines and 2nd graders will join us on Thursday, August 20th. Our newest students will begin their school year on Friday, August 21st. Kindergarten and 1st grader students will experience the day without any other students in the building, so they are ready for Monday, August 24th, when the whole school begins the year together.

Below you will find a lot of details to read through. Please take your time and read everything in this email and in the communications we will send throughout the next few weeks.  Things may shift and change as we prepare. As we continue into the next week, please feel free to email me with any questions you or your family have about returning to school. Your questions are important to us and will help us better communicate with you as we enter school in a whole new way.

Finally, I know many of you want to hear who your child’s teacher is so you can reach out and feel the comfort that comes with knowing. You will find the information below about when that will be communicated to you and what our meet and greet will look like in a virtual setting.

Thank you for trusting us with your child(ren). Thank you for your continued partnership and support.

    Kindergarten Information

We will be scheduling individual 30 minute meetings in the coming weeks. You will hear from a Kindergarten teacher by Friday, August 7th with more information about what this time will look like and how to sign up.

    Morning Arrival Information

    • All Grade Levels will have an assigned door to support safety and grade level cohorting. Please refer to the attached map to know which entrance your child(ren) will enter the school through.
    • Students are allowed on campus beginning at 7:45 a.m. We will have a soft start morning arrival allowing students to enter in through their assigned grade level doors anytime between 7:45-8:00 a.m.
      • If you are walking your child to school, please drop him/her off near the designated doors. There will be visual markings on the ground indicating where parents should drop off their child before allowing their child to walk independently to the assigned doors. This is to support physical distancing among parents, staff and students.
      • If you are driving your child to school, please be mindful that your child will need to enter the school through their assigned doors.
    • Students who arrive by bus will be met by a Cimarron staff member and walked to their designated grade level door.
    • Please be reminded that students should not play on the playground before school begins and please do not drop your children off at school prior to 7:45 a.m.
    • If your child arrives at school later than 8:00 am, please have him/her enter into school using the main entrance. Arriving after 8:00 will result in a tardy.
    • Students who eat breakfast at school will check in with their classroom teacher to begin the day and walk to the cafeteria to pick up breakfast and eat in their classroom.

    End of Day Dismissal

Afternoon Dismissal will begin at 2:40 pm to allow enough time for all students to exit the school safely
