Second Grade

  • Second Grade

    • Our second grade team warmly welcomes you to Rolling Hills.
One of the biggest milestones in second grade is learning the importance of responsibility including: academic, social, and personal responsibility. We eagerly encourage students to develop a strong desire to take ownership in their learning.
We will be focusing on the following academic areas of learning:
      Reading
Our reading instruction follows a Balanced Literacy approach and focuses primarily on comprehension skills, fluency, and learning to apply these skills across all academic areas.
    • Phonics
    • Our school uses the Level 2 Fundations to teach phonics and incorporates the Orton Gillingham model.
      Writing
Second graders work on a variety of writing skills with a major emphasis on organization, grammar, forming ideas, and correct usage of capitals and punctuation. Our three writing genres are Narratives, Opinion, and Informational. These genres are revisited throughout the year.
      Math
In 2nd grade, we use the Bridges Curriculum.  This focuses on developing students' deep understandings of mathematical concepts, proficiency with key skills, and ability to solve complex and novel problems. Bridges blends direct instruction, structured investigation, and open exploration, and taps into the intelligence strengths of all students by presenting material that is as linguistically, visually, and kinesthetically rich as it is mathematically powerful.
In second grade, students focus on addition and subtraction, place value, shapes, and length measurement. Throughout the year they:
      • Become fluent with addition and subtraction facts with numbers to 20
      • Add and subtract with numbers up to 1,000
      • Measure length and solve problems involving lengths
      • Identify, describe, compare, put together, and take apart shapes
    • For more information, there is a wonderful parent website:  Bridges Family Support.
      Science
Our second grade science units include: Balance and Motion, Plants and Animals, and Air and Weather.
    • Social Studies
Our social studies curriculum focuses on communities, personal financial literacy, citizenship, and geography.
