Third Grade

  • Welcome to third grade at Rolling Hills!

Third grade is a big transition year from the primary grades to the intermediate grades. Our goal is to help your child become an independent and confident learner. The units of study that are our focus for the year include:

    Reading

We focus primarily on reading comprehension strategies. Third grade shifts the reading focus from learning to read to reading to learn. Our students also work on fluency and word study.

    Writing

In third grade we work on writing in the following areas: technical, persuasive, narrative, and expository. Working on “showing” and not “telling” in our writing is a focus as well.

    Math

Rolling Hills uses the Bridges program. We focus on the 6 Colorado math standards: number sense, algebra, data and probability, geometry, measurement, and computation.

    Social Studies

Our third graders learn about the Native Americans, Map Skills, Cities Around the World, Europe, and Australia.

    Science

Matter and Energy; Roles of Living Things; Sun, Moon, and Earth; and Life Cycles are the science units of study.
