The week that was: A weekly wrap-up of CCSD athletics

CTHS Girls Softball second place Softball – Cherokee Trail places second in 5A State Championships

Congratulations to the Cherokee Trail girls softball team for their second-place finish in the 5A State Softball Tournament at Aurora Sports Park on Oct. 10. Led by junior pitcher Jenna Medhus and junior catcher Caitlin Cushenbery, the Cougars got to the final after eliminating Horizon, Broomfield and Chatfield. But tenth-seeded CT fell short in the championship, losing 5-1 to No. 4 Fossil Ridge. Kudos to Coach Caley Mitchell’s squad on a great season! Congratulations are also in order for fifth-seeded Smoky Hill who lost to Fossil Ridge in Round 2 on Oct. 8.CCHS Boys Golf Team

Golf – Cherry Creek leads district at 5A State Golf Tournament

The Cherry Creek Bruins boys golf team placed seventh in the state on Oct. 5 and 6 at The Club at Rolling Hills in Golden. The squad was led by sophomore Charlie Flaxbeard who finished in the individual top ten (seventh, tied with three other golfers). Congratulations to Coach Mark Goldsberry, his staff and players on a great season!

Football – A great first Friday night in the district

All six district high school football teams were in action on Oct. 9, and it was great to see competition resume on the gridiron. COVID-19 guidelines were carefully followed, and fun was had by all. Cherry Creek defeated Smoky Hill 35-14. Eaglecrest won over Cherokee Trail 62-50 in a wild game at Legacy Stadium. Grandview got a big win on the road over Arapahoe 38-7, and Overland lost a tough battle on the road at Legacy 13-10. Great effort by all.

All district teams will be in action the week of Oct. 12:

Thursday, Oct. 15: Eaglecrest vs. Grandview at Legacy Stadium – kickoff 7 p.m.

                            Arapahoe at Overland at Stutler Bowl – kickoff 7p.m.

Friday, Oct. 16:      Cherry Creek vs. Cherokee Trail at Legacy Stadium – kickoff 7 p.m.

                            Poudre at Smoky Hill at Stutler Bowl – kickoff 7 p.m.

CCHS Girls Cross Country Cross Country – Cherokee Trail, Creek and Grandview send teams to State

District cross country teams did well on Oct. 8 at the 5A Region 1 at Arapahoe County Fairgrounds. Led by boys’ senior Parker Wolf and girls’ sophomore Riley Stewart Cherry Creek will send both boys and girls teams to the State Championships on Oct. 17 in Colorado Springs. Wolf and Stewart both finished first in their respective divisions. Cherokee Trail will also send both boys and girls squads to state and Grandview will send its boys team. Smoky Hill and Eaglecrest also qualified at-large runners on the boys’ side. Good luck to our cross country athletes at state!

COVID-19 – Continue to keep our athletes safe

Following the three W’s – wear a mask, watch your distance and wash your hands – is vital to the health and wellbeing of our students, staff, families and community.  It allows our athletes to keep playing!
