5A Football – Cherry Creek, Eaglecrest and Cherokee Trail make 2020 5A Playoffs
Congratulations to the Cherry Creek, Eaglecrest and Cherokee Trail varsity football teams, which earned spots in the upcoming Colorado 5A football playoffs. Seeds and pairings were announced on Sunday by the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA). Teams were selected based on the CHSAA seeding index. Complete playoff brackets can be found here.
All CCSD teams were in action last week. On Thursday, Smoky Hill travelled to Littleton Public Stadium to play Arapahoe. Despite four touchdown passes by the Buffaloes’ Leslie Richardson III, the Buffaloes fell to the host Warriors 49-34 to finish 2-4 on the season. Junior receiver Anthony Harris Jr. hauled in three of those TDs in the loss. Next up, Smoky will host Fossil Ridge in a non-playoff contest at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Stutler Bowl.
On Friday, Grandview finished out Centennial regular season play with a 41-14 win over visiting Horizon at Legacy Stadium. Senior quarterback Jacob Burr led the Wolves with two touchdown passes to junior wideout Charlie Dick, and had two rushing scores of his own in the victory. Horizon was a late replacement opponent for Fossil Ridge who was in quarantine protocol. Coach John Schultz’s Wolves move to 3-3 on the season.
Also on Friday night, No. 9 Cherokee Trail defeated Overland 34-0 at the Stutler Bowl, for a fourth straight victory after starting the 2020 campaign at 0-2. The Cougars got three touchdown passes from senior QB Jayden Lavigne, and junior Nate Gaye Jr. ran for two scores in the win. CT finishes the season at 4-2 and makes the 5A playoffs.
Next up, Grandview hosts Columbine in a non-playoff game at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Legacy Stadium. Also on Thursday, Cherokee Trail will face Valor Christian in the first round of the playoffs. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. at Valor Stadium. On Friday, the Overland Blazers end their regular season travelling to Colorado Springs to play Doherty at 7:30 p.m. at Garry Berry Stadium.
No. 1 Cherry Creek and No. 4 Eaglecrest finished up weekend play on Saturday at Legacy Stadium. The Bruins lived up to their top ranking with an emphatic 50-0 shutout of the Raptors. The Bruins had a huge first quarter scoring 29 points, with three touchdowns from senior running back James Walker II. Eaglecrest turned the ball over four times, two of which directly led to Creek scores. Despite the tough loss, the Raptors are in the playoffs and will face Pomona at 5 p.m. on Friday at Valor Stadium. The Bruins enter the first round as the consensus top seed and will entertain 8-seeded Regis Jesuit at 4 p.m. on Friday at the Stutler Bowl.
