CTHS senior organizes supply drive for school in Africa
When Kenneth Thomas, senior at Cherokee Trail High School, was scrolling through the Tiktok social media app, he never expected to connect with a schoolteacher from Zambia.
“She had these really engaging videos,” Thomas said. “I look at what I have and I know how lucky I am. I think it’s important to take our opportunities and use them to give other people opportunities.”
Thomas had learned about Dora Moono Nyambe, who has become popular on TikTok with videos of her life and school in a rural village in Zambia. Nyambe recently completed a fundraising campaign that earned more than $80,000 -- an overwhelming amount compared to the $6,000 of her original goal. She teaches in a small, brick building and only recently was able to construct a well so her students have access to clean water.
Inspired by her story, Thomas worked with CTHS counselor Brooke Gabrielli, who suggested a school supply drive. Though the drive was delayed and was close to being postponed, Thomas was able to collect a large tub of school supplies from his classmates and will be shipping them to Zambia soon.
“I’m so grateful we were able to make this happen,” Thomas said. “I was worried, but you’re always going to have doubts. The important thing is to remember that if you put your mind to something, you can do it.”
