Wrestling – District grapplers headed to State Championships
CCSD boys and girls wrestlers qualified for the 5A State Wrestling Championships during regional tournaments last weekend. Grandview’s Frankie Sanchez, Jr. and Cherokee Trail’s Derek Glenn, Jr. took top honors at the Region 2 meet, held Friday and Saturday at CTHS. Glenn, who defeated Sanchez to win the state title last year, will go for a second straight crown – this time at the 113 pound weight. Sanchez will try to get to the finals at 106 pounds for the second year in a row. Other state qualifiers include Cherokee Trail’s Gabe Johnson, Cherry Creek’s Austin Luhring and Matthew Soderborg, Eaglecrest’s Kory Anderson and Overland’s Ryan Hensley. The State Tournament will be held March 13 at the Southwest Motors Event Center in Pueblo.
On the girls’ side, Eaglecrest will send three qualifiers to State. Katelyn Czerpak (Overland), Amaya Green (Cherokee Trail) and Blythe Cayko (Eaglecrest) all punched their tickets to Pueblo with their performances at regionals at Coronado High School this past weekend. The girls’ State Tournament will be held on March 11, also at the Southwest Motors Event Center in Pueblo.

Girls Swimming and Diving – Cherry Creek leads the way to the state tournament
The Cherry Creek Bruins swim and dive team will lead district competitors to the 5A State Championships which will take place on March 11 at the Veterans Memorial Aquatics Center (VMAC) in Thornton. Creek took top team honors at the Girls Centennial League Championships on Saturday at Smoky Hill. Grandview took third place, followed by Cherokee Trail in fourth, Smoky Hill sixth, Eaglecrest seventh and Overland eighth. Eaglecrest’s Catherine Rodocker won the Centennial A League Diving competition on Friday and also moves on to state.
Basketball – Cherry Creek and Grandview finish regular season undefeated
The Grandview girls and Cherry Creek boys basketball teams finished out their seasons last week, both undefeated and both ranked No. 1 in 5A. Both clubs posted 3-0 records last week, finishing 14-0 on the year. The Bruins get the No. 1 seed on the boys’ side, while Grandview gets a No. 3 seed in the girls’ tournament. Playoffs begin on March 9, and both squads will host opening games. The Cherry Creek and Eaglecrest girls also made the tournament, both with road games on March 9. For the boys, Eaglecrest and Smoky Hill will host games on March 9, while Overland will be on the road. The 2021 State Basketball Championships will be held March 19-20 at the World Arena in Colorado Springs.

Ice Hockey – District team wraps up season on March 10
The district Cherry Creek Bruins hockey team went 1-1 last week, defeating Dakota Ridge and falling to No. 1 Regis Jesuit. Creek wraps up the regular season on March 10 against Chaparral at Family Sports Ice Arena.
