The week that was: A weekly wrap-up of CCSD athletics

Girls basketball - GHS at Regis Girls & Boys Basketball – Heartbreak for district frontrunners

The 2021 Colorado State High School Basketball Tournament continued last week and the Cherry Creek Bruins boys team had an exciting matchup with conference rival Eaglecrest on Tuesday night. The game was well-contested early, but the Bruins were just too much for the Raptors and pulled away for the 77-55 victory. On March 18, No. 4 ThunderRidge came calling to take on the No. 1 Creek in the tournament’s Final Four. A tough, tight matchup ensued and nothing was decided in regulation. But the Grizzlies prevailed, outscoring the Bruins in overtime 8-6 for the 66-64 win. Despite the outcome, Cherry Creek had a terrific season and represented CCSD with distinction.

On the girls’ side, No. 3 Grandview had no problem with No. 6 Chaparral, posting the emphatic 79-30 win on Tuesday, to advance to the tournament’s Final Four. On Thursday, the Wolves travelled to No. 2 Regis Jesuit, and their season came to an end with a tough 73-69 loss to the Raiders. Trailing by 12 points in the last five minutes, the Wolves pulled themselves to within 2 points in the last 30 seconds, but couldn’t pull out a victory. Regardless, the Wolves had a great season in 2021.
