Board Unanimously Votes to Select Chief of Staff Christopher Smith as Sole Finalist for Superintendent
The following is a statement by Board of Education President Karen Fisher:
We started the process of selecting our next superintendent by soliciting input and listening to our community. Parents, teachers, administrators, students, and community leaders provided a valuable perspective that we referred to often over the past two months.
We ended the process with one-on-one interviews by each Board of Education member with each candidate, followed by group interviews. Both candidates shared their visions for leading the diverse students and staff that make up the Cherry Creek School district. Both are highly qualified and accomplished professionals who are committed to continuing to focus on the goals outlined in our Future Forward plan. Both are passionate about public education and the opportunities that we have to impact students’ lives through innovative learning, multiple pathways of purpose, engagement in the classroom, and teachers who are committed to excellence. This was not an easy decision, and we feel fortunate that we had a choice from more than one qualified internal candidate.
Today, March 24, in a unanimous decision, we voted to name Chief of Staff Christopher Smith as the sole finalist for the position of Superintendent. We believe that Mr. Smith’s proven success as a servant leader, a relationship builder, and someone who is committed to educating the whole child is the best fit for CCSD as we transition out of COVID and into the coming years. Mr. Smith shared plans for ensuring the wellbeing of students and staff, while budgeting and staffing our schools to achieve equitable outcomes for all students and align with our collective goals.
It is important to note that we see a future within CCSD for both candidates. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Perry’s skills are complimentary to Mr. Smith’s leadership style, and they have a long track record of collaborating and working together for our district. We value Dr. Perry’s dedication and long-term commitment and look forward to continuing to benefit from her leadership and institutional knowledge.
