Field Hockey – Cherry Creek off to a great start
The No. 2 Cherry Creek girls field hockey team is rolling early in the 2021 campaign. The Bruins have outscored opponents in the early going 27-3, including a huge 5-2 victory over a tough, No. 4 Regis Jesuit club last Wednesday. Next up, a big conference road contest with No. 11 Grandview on Thursday.
Boys Soccer – District teams battle for position in the Centennial League
The Grandview and Cherry Creek boys soccer clubs have been on the pitch vying for position in the tough 4A/5A Centennial League. No. 9 Grandview holds down the second spot in the standings behind first place Mullen, while No. 12 Creek is in fourth. After an early loss to the Bruins, the Wolves have won four straight, including a big victory over previously unbeaten Arapahoe on Senior Night. Grandview will face Overland and Mullen this week. The Bruins got two wins last week, and will play a tough Eaglecrest club on April 6. The season culminates on April 13 with the start of the Centennial Tournament which will be held at several venues in the conference.
Girls Volleyball – Cherokee Trail, Cherry Creek and Grandview pace district squads
A three-team race in the very competitive 4A/5A Centennial League is taking shape. Conference co-leader and No. 3 Cherokee Trail took its first loss last Wednesday to No. 4 Cherry Creek to fall to 6-1 on the season. With the win, the Bruins also improved to 6-1 sharing the Centennial lead. No. 7 Grandview got a big shutout win at Mullen to stay close, improving to 5-2. No. 10 Eaglecrest remained fourth in league standings.
2021 State Volleyball Championships are moving
The Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) announced on Friday that the State Girls Volleyball Tournament will be held in Loveland at the NORCO (Northern Colorado) Volleyball Facility on May 10-11. You can find detailed information here.
Season B All-State Teams announced
CCSD student athletes and coaches received All-State honors in swimming and wrestling last week. In 5A girls swimming and diving, Cherry Creek Coach Eric Craven was named the Coach of the Year. Coach Craven led the Bruins to their 27th state championship in program history, their first since 2010.
Eaglecrest’s Catherine Rodocker was named to the first team 1 meter diving. Cherry Creek had several second-teamers, including Elizabeth Brock (500 Free), Lawson Ficken (50 Free, 200 Free Relay), Alexis Greenhawt (200 Free Relay), Avery Hall (200 Free Relay) and Jenna Smith (200 Free Relay). In 5A boys wrestling, Cherokee Trail’s Derek Glenn, Jr. (113lbs) and Cherry Creek’s Matthew Soderborg (195lbs) received second-team honors. Grandview’s Frankie Sanchez, Jr. (106lbs) received honorable mention. Get a complete list of honorees here.

Grandview names new head football coach
Grandview High School announced last Tuesday that Tom Doherty is the school’s new head football coach. Doherty, who was the defensive coordinator of the state champion Cherry Creek Bruins for nine seasons, takes the helm from John Schultz, who retired after 17 seasons. Previously, Doherty was the head coach at Eaglecrest for six seasons and also had stints as defensive coordinator at Smoky Hill and Mullen.
