Local Daughters of the American Revolution chapter donates books to five CCSD schools
An Aurora chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution will donate a number of books to Cherry Creek School District elementary schools that highlight the contributions of Black Americans during the Revolutionary War.
The Toll Gate Creek Chapter of the NSDAR will donate copies of six different books to Cimarron, Mission Viejo, Independence, Peakview and Aspen Crossing elementary schools. These titles, which include “Crispus Attacks,” “Phoebe the Spy,” “Brave Black Patriot,” “Magic Tree House,” “Black Heroes of the American Revolution” and “If You Were a Kid During the American Revolution” explore the contributions of Black Americans, both free and enslaved, during the country’s war for independence in the 18th century.
According to officials from the organization, the book donations are designed to offer students vital information and context about the Revolutionary War from a perspective that has been historically overlooked.
“We hope the books will inspire children to learn about the history of the United States, their own heritage and the pride of their ancestors as they fought for freedom,” Chapter Librarian Nancy Edwards said in a release.
Toll Gate NSDAR officials added that the donation offers a chance to spark a love of learning in young readers and give them a historical perspective that is inclusive and accurate.
“The NSDAR chapter annually donates books to local schools. This year, the chapter determined to highlight the role that Black Americans played in the attainment of our nation’s freedom by selecting six books featuring Black patriots,” officials explained. “It is the hope of the chapter that one of these books may spark a child’s imagination and nurture the love of reading.”
Thanks to the Toll Gate Creek chapter for encouraging literacy and historical perspective for our students!
