Volleyball – Grandview takes second at State Championships
The Grandview High School girls volleyball team is the Colorado 5A State runner-up for 2021. Coach Rob Graham’s last-seeded club started the tourney May 12 at the World Arena in Colorado Springs. The Colorado 5A State Tourney marked the official end to Season C in Colorado high school athletics.
The Wolves engineered a big upset over number one and previously undefeated Mountain Vista winning three sets to one (27-25) (21-25) (25-17) (25-15) over the Eagles. On Thursday, the Wolves took on number four Columbine in the first match of the day. The Rebels had eliminated number five Cherry Creek the day before three sets to one. Grandview defeated Columbine in five sets (23-25) (22-25) (25-15) (25-22) (15-12), marked by a stirring three-set comeback after being down two sets to none.
That set the stage for the state title match against second-seeded Rampart on Thursday evening. The 12-1 Rams proved to be too tough for the Cinderella Wolves and ended their season with a three sets to one victory to claim the state crown.
Though disappointed, Coach Graham said the team should be proud.
“Everything was about us battling back, being the underdog and they proved that they deserve to be here,” Graham said. “That’s all we did was fight. All season. I’m so proud of them.”
Grandview Junior Maya Deferme shared the same sentiment. “I’m so proud of how far we got. And they (Rampart) are a good team. It obviously is tough to lose, but I feel proud of where we are.”
Congratulations to the Wolves!
Baseball – Cherry Creek Coach Marc Johnson breaks state record
Cherry Creek Baseball Coach Marc Johnson became the winningest high school baseball coach in Colorado history last Wednesday. After tying the mark on May 8, Johnson and his Bruins broke the record with win number 808 with a thrilling, come-from-behind 6-5 victory over Grandview last Wednesday.
“Obviously, I’m very happy,” said Johnson, who wants to redirect attention to his student athletes. “I told the kids I did not want this to be a distraction. I want them to know that baseball is about them. I’ve never played an inning all those years. Everything’s been the kids, and it goes back to the early seventies to now. Every kid, every family, all the school administrators, the coaching staff. I mean everybody played a huge part in this,” he added.
This is Johnson’s 49th year as head baseball coach at Cherry Creek High School. He said he’s proud of the tradition that has been built.
“It’s exciting for me, but I want to come back and say again, for me it’s always been about the kids. It’s been about baseball. I love baseball, I love kids, and I feel incredibly blessed to have coached as long as I have.”
A big congratulations to Coach Johnson.
