Prairie Middle School student shares joy by celebrating every "day"
The students in Shawn Poole’s sixth-grade advisory class at Prairie Middle School have learned a lot during this challenging year. In addition to collaboration and critical thinking skills, they’ve learned perseverance from dealing with a global pandemic. They’ve learned resilience as they went from Hybrid learning to Remote learning and back again, before returning to school full time on April 5.
Thanks to their classmate Annabel Jones, they also learned that October 16 is National Dictionary Day, that February 2 is National Tater Tot Day, that May 26 is National Paper Airplane Day.
“I had nothing to do with it,” said Poole, who also teaches language arts and social studies. “She just started coming in and announcing it from day one. It wasn’t something that was planned.”
“I was just curious,” Jones said. “I looked it up on Google.”
Jones and her mother sometimes do an activity related to whatever national day it is, and she started sharing the information with her classmates. Poole and his students say Jones brought a daily dose of fun to class, whether they were meeting in person or virtually.
“I honestly thought it was cool!” said fellow sixth-grader Humberto Perez Gonzalez. “She always has a great attitude and is positive.”
Sometimes the national day is incorporated into classwork, such as the day students created and tested paper airplanes to see which flew the farthest. And sometimes, it’s just for fun. It’s been such a bright part of this dark year, that Poole reached out to the folks at the National Day Calendar website to see if he could get some recognition for Jones.
“It’s been such a hard year for teachers, kids, parents, everybody,” Poole said. “If we can bring a little bit of joy to somebody, that would be amazing.”
The National Day Calendar team agreed and organized and online shout-out to “Annabel from Aurora” on Monday, May 31, which is Memorial Day, but also National Smile Day!
Seems fitting!
