Baseball – CCSD clubs end their seasons at Regionals
A disappointing end for district baseball teams on June 14, as Cherokee Trail, Cherry Creek and Grandview all failed to advance out of regional play.

In Region 8 at Valor Christian, 11th ranked Cherry Creek defeated No. 22 Rocky Mountain 8-6 in the first game, but fell to Valor later in the afternoon, 10-0, as the Eagles moved on. In Region 7 at Chatfield High School, No. 19 Grandview edged No. 14 Douglas County 6-5 in the opener. The afternoon nightcap saw the Wolves behind No. 3 Chatfield early, but they rallied late before finally falling to the Chargers 13-11, as Chatfield advanced to the state tournament. Grandview finishes at 11-7.
Congratulations to the Cougars, Bruins and Wolves on a great 2021 season.
Boys and Girls Lacrosse – Heartbreak for district teams
For the first time in the sanctioned history of Colorado girls lacrosse, the Cherry Creek Bruins will not play in the championship game. The Bruins suffered a heartbreaking loss to ThunderRidge in the 5A state quarterfinals on June 19 at Creek, final score 13-12. The Grizzlies were afforded a free-position (penalty) shot with seconds left in 12-12 match, and ThunderRidge capitalized to advance to the semifinal round. The Bruins have played in every state final since the sport was sanctioned by CHSAA in 1998. The 2021 Creek team finishes at 7-4. Congratulations to Head Coach Bailey Zerr and the Bruins on a great season, and to the Cherry Creek Girls Lacrosse Program for a truly remarkable run. The Grandview Wolves also qualified for the tournament as the eighth seed, but fell to No. 9 Air Academy 10-9 on June 17 at Legacy Stadium. Head Coach Alex Smith and the Wolves finish at 7-4.
On the boy’s side, Creek, the defending 5A Champions (from 2019) fell to Mountain Vista 13-12 in overtime in the state semifinal on June 19 at Englewood High School. The Golden Eagles and Bruins endured an hour and ten minute weather delay before the match could begin. Previously undefeated at 11-0, Cherry Creek got off to a great start, leading 4-0 early. But Mountain Vista rallied and took a 7-5 lead into the halftime break. Bruins led 10-9 after three quarters of play, and the score was tied at 12-all going into sudden-death overtime. The Golden Eagles got the winner a little over a minute into the session to advance. Creek finishes at 11-1. Congratulations to Head Coach Matthew Bocklet and the Bruins on another great season.
