The week that was: A weekly wrap-up of CCSD athletics
Season D for spring sports came to an end on June 26, wrapping up the very challenging 2020-21 school year. Student athletes, coaches, parents and the entire high school sports community will certainly look back on the year as possibly the most stressful – and most rewarding – sports year ever. While athletics looked very different this past year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, our student athletes did get the opportunity to compete. Thanks to everyone involved for making this year especially memorable.
5A State Track & Field – Grandview boys take state, girls take second
The Grandview High School track & field team took home the hardware on June 26 after three days of events at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood. The boys captured the team State Championship while the girls took second place honors. Led by strong sets of sprinters and individual field events on both teams, the boys beat out Cherry Creek (2nd), Cherokee Trail (5th) and Eaglecrest (13th). The girls were runner-up to Valor Christian and led Cherry Creek (3rd) and Cherokee Trail (9th).
Wolves Coach John Reyes was pleased with the results. “Feels good. Feels really good. It was a really fun group,” he said. “In 2014, we probably should have won on the boys side and didn’t, so to get it this year was huge. It’s the first boys title for the school. We got the first girls state championship in 2017, and I’m super excited for the girls to get runner-up this season, because they did some great things. They were all just a great group of kids,” he added.
Congratulations to Grandview Track & Field on a great season!
5A State Track & Field – Cherry Creek’s Stewart wins four individual titles
Cherry Creek junior distance runner Riley Stewart keeps adding to her remarkable career as a Bruin. Stewart won state crowns in the Girls 4x800 Meter Relay, the Girls 800 Meter Run, the Girls 3200 Meter Run and the girls 1600 Meter run.
“It’s been a crazy, long weekend, but it’s been so rewarding, I’m so happy to have this opportunity back here, after freshman year,” Stewart said.
The Bruins girls team finished 3rd in the state, and Stewart felt their support throughout the three days of events.
“My team has been so supportive. It’s all for my coaches and my team that motivates me,” she said. It’s an amazing sport, and I’m just so happy to be able to run and have this opportunity.”
Grandview was the State Champion in the Girls 800 Sprint Medley with a winning time of 1:46.71. Overland’s Zeaniah Wedgeworth was the State Champion in the Girls 100 Meter Hurdles coming in first with a time of 14.36. “It feels good,” said Oday. “I was a little worried I wouldn’t have my legs under me because it was my sixth race during these last three days of state. But I felt proud of myself that I got through it.”
Eaglecrest junior sprinter Sterling Brassfield was the State Champion in the 100 Meter Dash. “I just went out there, just executed, piece by piece, and just trusted my body really,” he said. “And at the end of the race I leaned, and then looked, and it said 10.63, and I was like, ‘Whoa,’ and it’s an honor and I’m glad to have taken state,” he added.

5A Boys Swimming – Cherry Creek takes State
The Cherry Creek Bruins boys swimming & diving team won its 12th State Championship on June 24. Led by record-breaking times in the 200 Yard Medley and 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, the Bruins racked up 530 points to lead the state followed by Regis Jesuit with 400.5 and Heritage at 276. Cherokee Trail finished 12th, Smoky Hill 13th and Grandview 19th.
“I could not be more proud of our swimmers, our divers and our coaching staff,” said Bruins Head Coach Chris Loftis. “This has obviously been our most difficult year, just because it was short, and there were restrictions and limitations and we were unsure on how to approach it, but we came together with a plan for the athletes and they did their work to a ‘T.’ They deserve everything they got because of that,” he said.
“It’s a lot of work, and it’s the culmination of all the hours I’ve put in and the guys behind me, and it means a lot right now to be state champions,” said Cherry Creek senior Bryce Ortanes. “Practice at 6 a.m. is the hardest. You wake up, you get there with these other guys I call family, and they make it better. We get through it together. I think that’s why we’ve developed such a bond that will carry on,” he added.
On the diving side, Cherry Creek junior Conrad Eck took 3rd, Caleb Liban placed 8th and Jackson Whitehead took 10th. Grandview junior Patrick Duffy was 13th while Smoky Hill junior Brandon Bicknell placed 20th.

5A Girls State Golf – Eaglecrest and Cherry Creek pace the district
The 2021 5A Girls State Golf Championships were played on June 21 and 22 at Denver’s City Park Golf Course. Eaglecrest senior Emma Bryant came in 4th overall, shooting a 5 over par 75 on Monday, and a 2 over 72 on Tuesday.
“I’m a little bit disappointed on the end result, obviously,” said Bryant. “Overall, I can’t really complain on how I played, I didn’t make enough birdies out there, but I hit good shots, I hit the driver really well, I made the putts I needed to make. I’m glad I ended my high school career on a fairly positive note,” she added.
Bryant, who won the state title as a freshman in 2018, will be playing golf at the University of Denver next year. Her experience at the 5A tournament has been unusual to say the least, as her attempt to repeat in 2019 was cut short a round due to weather, and the pandemic which shut the state tourney down in 2020. She is the second in her family to play at such a high level, as brother Davis won it all in 2017, and is currently playing for CSU. Eaglecrest Coach John Olander said that Emma got through myriad challenges.
“She’s got a state title (from 2018). You can never take that away from her,” Olander said. “I know she was hoping to get one or two more by the time she left, but it just didn’t work out that way. But she’s a special kid. A better kid than she is a golfer.”
Cherokee Trail sophomore Chunya Boonta finished 6th with a two-round total of 150.
On the team side, Cherry Creek took 3rd in the state paced by senior Alyssa Chin. Loveland took the state title and Rock Canyon placed 2nd.
Girls Soccer – Cherry Creek is eliminated by eventual state champs
The Cherry Creek Bruins girls soccer team lost a tough match to Broomfield on June 23 at Englewood High School stadium. The final score was Eagles 1, Bruins 0. The club finishes the 2021 campaign 11-2, winning the 5A/4A Centennial League.
5A Boys Volleyball – District teams end their seasons early
Eaglecrest, Cherokee Trail and Cherry Creek all advanced out of regional play on June 19, but couldn’t advance after contests at the first-ever State Championships on June 25-26. Cherokee Trail fell to Legend 3 sets to none (15-25) (18-25) (11-25) The Cougars finish 8-8. Cherry Creek lost their quarterfinal match to Valor Christian 3 sets to none (21-25) (16-25) (20-20). The Bruins finish the year at 10-6. Eaglecrest got to the semifinal round by defeating James Irwin in five sets, 3 sets to 2 (26-28) (25-16) (17-25) (25-23) (15-13). But the Raptors fell to eventual State Champion and undefeated Douglas County in a 3 set sweep (20-25) (19-25) (16-25). Eaglecrest finishes the 2021 campaign at 13-4.
What a year!
